In need of a new mattress? Spring is here and so are the next lots of mattress sales – we check them every month, so you won't end up falling for a nightmare deal. 

Plenty of brands claim big discounts, but we've often spotted similar prices being offered throughout the year. Our experts scour the deals to help you identify genuine bargains worth considering.

Dormeo is a popular mattress brand and its Spring Sale has brought down the price of its Octasmart Essentials Aerocell foam mattress below £200. The manufacturer offers free delivery, a 60-night trial and 18-year warranty.

This mattress is designed for people who prefer a firmer foam mattress that you won't sink into too much because it springs back quickly after being compressed.

But you'll need to read our full review to find out about its durability and support levels.

Another top pick: Breasley Select Plus Memory 1000 Pocket

We don't like: It's a bit bouncy and hard to rotate, no sleep trial

Exclusive to online retailer MattressNextDay, the Breasley Select Plus Memory 1000 pocket is already cheaper than the average pocket sprung mattress. Now it is on offer for £229, which MattressNextDay says is a £90 saving on the full price.

This 21cm-thick double mattress includes a 14cm pocket spring core over a shredded polyurethane base layer, covered by various layers of foam and memory foam. It's described as medium firm but in our independent tests, it was rated 7.2 on a scale from 1 (very firm) to 10 (very soft).

Despite the foam layers, it doesn't feel overly warm to lie on when you get into bed, so it should suit most people.

Ikea Vesteröy firm 904.506.30

We don't like: It's bouncy

It's very rare that we get to feature an Ikea mattress in our deals page, but this month you can snap up this already cheaper-than-average pocket sprung mattress for just £199 now, saving £30.

It combines a 15.5cm pocket spring core with two layers of foam on top.

Based on our independent assessments, it's rated 4.2 on a scale of 1 (very firm) to 10 (very soft).

It comes with a 10-year guarantee.

Emma Premium

We like: It's breathable

We don't like: Some transfer of movement across the mattress

Formerly known as the Original Hybrid, Emma says that this bed-in-a-box foam mattress has 'unrivalled temperature control and unbeatable comfort'. Its zoned pocket-spring core is topped with layers of pressure-relieving memory foam, and there is a 200-night trial, a 10-year guarantee and ‘hassle-free returns’ on offer to tempt you.

The brand says this is a medium-firm mattress, and our lab tests confirm this. In our independent firmness tests, this mattress ranked as 4.7, with one being the firmest and 10 the softest.

EZE Hybrid Ultra

• Double

We like: It's easy to turn over on

We don't like: There is no trial nights offer

The EZE Hybrid Ultra mattress may catch your eye with promises of long-lasting memory foam, pressure-relieving breathable layers and pocket springs to optimise support while you lie down plus a soft-touch fabric cover. But we've seen it on offer before, so there's no need to panic buy. 

Although EZE describes it as a hybrid, the large pocket spring core means we class it as pocket sprung (despite the foam layers). It's marketed as a ‘soft mattress’. In our independent firmness assessments, we marked it as 7.1 firmness, on a scale from 1 (very firm) to 10 (very soft).

Delivery is free and there is a 10-year warranty.

Emma Smart Hybrid

We like: The washable cover

We don't like: This mattress doesn't benefit from Emma's generous trial period

This hybrid mattress from Emma combines foam, aqua gel and pocket springs, promising pressure relief.

The Emma Smart Hybrid is sold only in shops, unlike the bed-in-a-box mattresses we're used to seeing from Emma. Some retailers are offer a trial, but you’ll need to check exactly what deal is on offer from where you buy. The usual trial nights offer you get when buying directly from Emma may not apply.

Dormeo S Plus Evolution

• Double

We like: Can adapt to more than one person, easy to move around on

We don't like: The concept may not suit everybody

The Dormeo S Plus Evolution is an interesting concept. It's made up of two ‘single’ cores that have a firm side and a soft side. You can flip them individually to suit the preferences of sleeping partners on either side of the bed. 

At its heart is a 6cm layer of foam springs, sandwiched between thick 10.4 cm layers of foam, with a further 2.7cm layer of memory foam on one surface, which you can choose to lie on, or not. It’s topped with a removable, machine-washable cover and there are four grips along the sides to help you move it about.

It's available on a 60-night comfort trial. If you don’t like it the manufacturer will collect it for free and refund you in full. It also comes with a 15-year warranty.

Emma Diamond Hybrid

• Double

We like: The cover is removable for washing

We don't like: It could be easier to move about

The Emma Diamond mattress combines pocket springs and foam for ‘outstanding comfort and support’ according to the brand.

It's constructed from a combination of pocket springs and foam layers. Inside you’ll find a 13cm core of pocket springs, on top of which is a 6cm layer of foam and a separate 3cm layer of memory foam, below the pocket spring core there’s a thinner layer (3cm) of foam.

Unusually, the Emma Diamond Hybrid isn't sold at the manufacturer's own website – only in other shops. That may be more convenient for you, but does mean that the retailer might not have the same generous free trial that Emma provides directly. Double check to see if there's a trial available where you buy it from.

How to spot a good deal on a mattress

Lisa Galliers, Which? mattress expert, says:

'Don't panic about buying a mattress purely because it's on sale because there are plenty of discounts throughout the year. Some of the mattresses in this deals round-up have been available at the offer price for a while, but are still a good price for the mattress. 

'We've also tested a range of good-value mattresses from brands that don't usually offer discounts – so if you want to keep costs down, you can still pick up a decent mattress for a fraction of the price of some.'

How to get the best deals on specific mattress brands

Whether you're after an Emma mattress or want to swap your old mattress for a new memory foam one, it's worth keeping an eye out for sales on your chosen brand's website. Social media can also be a good place to spot a bargain. 

Offers come and go throughout the year, but the deals might not be on the particular mattress you want, so check the T&Cs. Also, we've started to spot deals being swapped between the same mattress but with different cover options.  

Make sure you're ready when the discounts start. Compare mattresses to find out which ones will be a dream and which could turn into an expensive nightmare – and don't forget that retailers might have other sales in-store.

Dormeo mattress deals

You might have spotted Dormeo mattresses on TV or via ads popping up on Facebook – we've seen a range of deals available, along with free gifts such as pillows and duvets on top of existing price reductions. And, although its mattresses can be found through other retailers, in the past we've noticed that buying direct from Dormeo can sometimes save you a small amount in addition to any free gifts it may be offering. 

So we'd suggest you check the website as a starting point. We've seen discounts of up to 60% in the past.

Emma mattress deals

The Emma Original mattress used to be one of the most popular models on the Which? website. 

This bed-in-a-box brand delivers its rolled-up mattress direct to your door – it currently offers a trial of 200 nights. From what we've seen since we started this page, Emma offers a variety of deals available at different times, so keep an eye on the website and social media because you're bound to find a deal. The CMA is currently investigating Emma regarding its sales, and customers have recently reported issues with delivery. We've been in touch with Emma and the company has said it's dealing with the issues. 

The best discount we've seen regularly is around 50%, although we've also previously seen even bigger savings, such as 65% off of some mattresses.

Eve mattress deals

Another bed-in-a-box mattress brand, Eve is now owned by Bensons for Beds. You can find deals on the Eve Sleep website and at other retailers. Like rival mattress manufacturer Nectar, Eve offers a one-year sleep trial, so you can try out the mattress and, if you don't love it, send it back free of charge. 

Be warned, though – if you buy an Eve mattress via another retailer, such as Argos, the trial-nights offer might not apply.

As a guide, we've seen deals offering 20-30% off, and up to 50%. Check the T&Cs before you buy, as these discounts often apply only to certain mattresses or if you spend above a particular amount, or for new customers. Eve seems to swap deals fairly regularly between its mattresses.

Ikea mattress deals

You might not see Ikea mattresses on offer, but that's because they're generally good value for money at full price. We've got 11 of them on our website, ranging from £99 up to around £689, with an average price of £361.

Simba mattress deals

Another brand that's no stranger to a deal, Simba mattresses arrive vacuum-packed in a box to your door. Simba offers free returns and its website states that it won’t ask you to get the mattress back in the box for the return journey. 

We've spotted a range of deals from Simba offering 25-40% off. As a rule, 30-35% off is a good deal. Do check the T&Cs, though, as there can be conditions attached – such as a minimum spend or a discount that only applies to a particular mattress. The CMA is also currently investigating Simba regarding its sales.

Are mattress sleep trials worth it? 

Sleep trials – commonly offered by online-only, bed-in-a-box mattress brands – allow you the time to try out a mattress to see if it's the right one for you. If you don’t like it, you can return it within the trial period. 

This can be useful if you're not sure which type of mattress will suit you best.

A long sleep trial lets you try your mattress during different seasons and gives you time to adjust, which is particularly important if you’re switching from springs to foam. If you have back pain, for example, it could take quite a while to get used to a new mattress.

Not all sleep trials are the same, though, and some have strings attached. 

If you're buying a mattress that offers a sleep trial, check the T&Cs first. See how many nights you'll need to keep it for, if you need to use a mattress protector and what you need to do to return it if it's not right for you.

Also, bear in mind that if you buy from a third-party retailer, the terms of a sleep trial – and whether they're offering one at all – might differ from those you get if you buy directly from the brand.
