How we test soup makers

using a soup maker

We select bestselling soup makers sold at UK retailers and test them to see how quickly and easily they make an appetising smooth and chunky soup.

We regularly revisit the soup makers on sale to see if there are any more popular models that need testing and when we find them we do.

Cooking quality

We use the soup makers to whip up a smooth butternut squash, and chunky chicken and vegetable soup. We assess both soups on the following:

  • Quality We check that our smooth soups are lump-free. We also check that the ingredients in our chunky soup are cooked through, without turning to mush.
  • Cooking time We time how long each soup maker takes to make our two recipes.
  • Temperature We record the temperature of our soup to check it's as close to 75°C as possible. Soup that's too tepid or too hot gets marked down.

Ease of use

  • We check if the instructions were clearly laid out and easy to understand.
  • We move onto setting up the soup maker, checking that the lid, attachments and any accessories are easy to fit.
  • When soup making is underway, we check if all controls are clearly labelled and well-positioned, and that cooking indicators make sense.

Cleaning

  • We judge how easy each soup maker is to clean, both inside and out.
  • For soup makers with a self-clean function, we try it out to see how effective it is.

Energy efficiency

We plug in an energy-use monitor while each soup maker is running. We use this to check energy use when making smooth and chunky soups.

Noise

We listen out for the soup makers that are almost silent or that make loud blending noises during cooking.

Is it worth buying a soup maker?

Pros

  • They're cheap to run If you were to make soup once a week using a soup maker, under the energy price cap from 1 April 2024 (24.5p per kWh), it would cost between £1.56 and £5.72 of electricity a year.
  • They do most of the work for you A soup maker cooks and blends all in one appliance. Your vegetables may need some light chopping, but you won't need to spend time finely dicing them or washing up lots pots and utensils. Some even have a self-clean function so you don't need to spend lots of time washing the jug.
  • Soup is ready to serve Get the right one and it'll make soup to the correct temperature. We found differences in temperatures of 75°C to 91°C, so read our reviews ensure the temperature is just right (around 75-80°C).
  • You can make more than soup Most soup makers can also make smoothies. Some, including the Tefal PerfectMix Cook (SQUIRREL_TEXT_50010781) and the Ninja Foodi Blender & Soup Maker (SQUIRREL_TEXT_12879297), also make desserts, jam, sauces and more.

Cons

  • Storage space If you don't have the space for another appliance, could you make your soup in one you already own such as a multi cooker or blender
  • The cost of an extra appliance The soup makers we tested start from £40. If you don't make soup regularly, a saucepan and hand blender will also do the job.

How to use a soup maker

vegetables in a soup maker
  1. Chop ingredients evenly Smaller chunks will help your soup to cook quicker and more evenly, but you don't need to finely dice them.
  2. Add your ingredients to the jug with seasoning and stock Don't fill the jug above the max fill line. If you do this your soup maker may leak while blending.
  3. Select the smooth or chunky soup function Each cooking mode has a pre-set time it takes to make the soup.
  4. Sit back and wait The soup maker will do all the hard work for you - it'll heat up the ingredients and blend them if you've chosen the smooth soup setting.

Here are some soup maker tips to make the process easier:

  • Try adding veg high in vitamin B and C at the end These vitamins are heat-sensitive, so can be lost if you cook vegetables that contain these (such as peppers, broccoli, spinach or peas) for too long. Some soup makers have a pause button that can help with this, but these are more common on soup-making blenders.
  • Use lentils to thicken up your soup These are cheap, and an excellent source of protein and fibre.
  • Use a little oil Sautéing onions or garlic in oil at the beginning doesn’t add a lot of fat to your soup, but can help pack in more flavour. Some soup makers have a sauté setting to help with this.

Can you put raw meat in a soup maker?

Check the instructions before you attempt this. Most soup makers don't reach a high-enough temperature for an extended period to cook meat thoroughly.

The Ninja Foodi Blender and Soup Maker (SQUIRREL_TEXT_12879297) is one of the few soup makers that allow you to add raw meat safely.

One way to incorporate meat into your soup recipes is to use leftover cooked meat from other meals, such as roasts.

Do you put raw vegetables in a soup maker?

vegetables in a soup maker

Yes, soup makers have a heating element that cooks raw vegetables. If you're making a smooth soup, this will ensure the vegetables are soft enough to blend.

Tough vegetables such as butternut squash, carrots and potatoes will need chopping into smaller pieces. This will help them to fully cook in the soup maker cycle, which can be as short as 19 minutes.
