How we test performance

Takes into account the difference between maximum and minimum speed, and how pleasant a breeze is created. For the pleasant breeze assessment, we use the lowest comparable speed and at the user panel's preferred speed, which we think you're most likely to use (with and without oscillation)

How we test quietness

We test for quietness on the lowest and highest speed settings, on the lowest speed with oscillation switched on (if you have it running overnight and you're sharing a bed with your partner, you might not want it directed at one person the whole time, so you'll want oscillation on, but you'll also want it to be quiet) and on the speed setting that's most comparable across all tested models

How we test ability to distribute air from the outside

Some fans allow you to draw in cooler air from outside, if you position your fan near a window. This can be useful on days where the outdoor temperatures is cooler than that indoors.

How we test ease of use

Looks at how good the instructions are, how easily the fan can be assembled, how easy the fan is to set up using the manual controls on the fan and via the remote control (if available), how easily the fan gets dirty, and how easy it is to clean

How we test energy use

We look at power consumption at the highest and lowest speeds, at the lowest speed with oscillation switched on, and at the speed that is comparable across all tested models
