The Canon laser printers we've put through our independent lab tests were mostly good across the board. But Canon's inkjet models can be more hit and miss, with some really missing the mark.

Canon printers compared: which range is best for you?

Canon Pixma

Canon’s biggest range of printers by far is the Pixma inkjet family. Prices range from £25 to more than £150. Although a fair few Pixmas are Best Buys, there are plenty that get a mediocre score of around 50%, so the name isn’t a guarantee of quality. 

• IP and IX models mean the product is a standalone basic printer.
• MG is used for all-in-ones.
• MX printers are designed for home-office use.
• MP models are geared towards photo printing. 
• The latest generation of Pixma printers is the TS range, which go from the entry-level 5-series up to the top-end 9-series. 

Canon Maxify 

Whereas Pixma printers are aimed at general consumers, Canon’s Maxify inkjet printers are more for home-office users. They usually have productivity-focused features, such as fax and automatic document feeders. 

We've seen some good Maxify printers, but others have underwhelmed in our tests. So it's best to check our printer reviews before buying.

Canon i-Sensys

Canon doesn't only produce inkjets: there's also the i-Sensys range of laser printers. Some of the best-scoring Canon printers we’ve tested are i-Sensys models, but with some costing hundreds of pounds, you do pay for that extra quality. Plus, these models don’t always have copying and scanning functions. 

So if you're looking to keep costs down, consider an all-in-one inkjet printer instead. 

Canon Selphy

These are dedicated compact photo printers designed for printing directly from a smartphone or camera.

Can I use other ink in my Canon printer?

Original-brand cartridges can be expensive, and many consumers would prefer to use third-party inks. But from our surveys, we know that many members are worried about third-party cartridges not working in their printer.  

We asked Canon in June 2022 whether any of its printer models actively prevent the use of third-party inks. Canon acknowledged that some companies make ink cartridges that are compatible with its printers, but wouldn’t go further than that. 

If you find that a cartridge doesn't work in your Canon printer, most third-party brands offer guarantees and will refund or replace the cartridge. 

Third-party ink brands consistently outperform original brands in our annual survey – customers are pleased with their good print quality and fantastic value for money.
