Disney Plus landed in the UK in 2020 and brought with it a wealth of content - it's the home of popular films from the Marvel franchise as well as the family classics we all associate with Disney.

What is Disney Plus?

Disney Plus is the latest member of the increasingly crowded TV streaming market and is going up against heavyweights such as Amazon Prime Video and Netflix. Disney is hoping that its large library of wide-ranging content from The Simpsons to The Avengers will entice people to sign up.

Is Disney Plus the same as DisneyLife?

DisneyLife was Disney's previous streaming platform and hosted lots of its movies and films (but not Marvel, Star Wars or National Geographic content). DisneyLife no longer exists - it was replaced with Disney Plus and existing customers were moved over to the new platform when it has launched.

What's on Disney Plus?

Disney Plus claims to have more than 1,000 movies and TV series available, and has content ranging from:

  • Disney animated classics, such as The Jungle Book, Lion King and Dumbo
  • Films and original TV shows from Marvel, including The Avengers and She-Hulk
  • Exclusive films such as Hamilton, Encanto and Jungle Cruise
  • Original and back-catalogue content from the ‘Star Wars’ universe, including The Mandalorian, Andor, and Obi-Wan Kenobi
  • National Geographic content, including Wicked Tuna and Brain Games
  • Pixar films, including The Incredibles and Toy Story.

What is Star on Disney Plus?

Disney expanded its range of content with the addition of Star – a more adult-themed mix of TV shows, films and original programming. Alongside this came enhanced parental controls, so you can be sure kids are kept a safe distance from anything that might be deemed inappropriate.

New content includes popular TV shows like 24, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lost, and The X-Files. You'll also find a range of film favourites, from Braveheart to White Men Can't Jump. 

You don't need to do anything to get Star – content should be ready and waiting for you under the Star category.

How much is Disney Plus?

Disney Plus currently costs £7.99 per month, or you can save over 15% by paying £79.90 for a year.

What is Premier Access on Disney Plus?

Disney+ occasionally allows some subscribers first access to some cinematic releases for an additional fee - 'Premier Access' is an add-on that allows you to watch certain new films at the same time they are available in cinemas for an extra £19.99 per film - a potentially cost-effective option for films the whole family will enjoy. 

However, it's worth keeping in mind that Premier Access films will eventually also become available to all Disney+ subscribers.

How to watch Disney Plus on your TV

Depending on the age and make of your TV, you may be able to access Disney Plus directly by downloading the app.

Those with older sets can looking at purchasing a streaming device, like an Amazon Fire Stick, or using a games console.

How many people can watch Disney Plus at the same time?

Disney Plus allows for up to four streams at the same time as well as the ability to set up to seven different profiles per account.

Can you download Disney Plus content to watch offline?

Disney Plus subscribers are able to download as much content as they like for up to 10 devices with no limit on how long the download can stay on your device. There will likely be a requirement to go online after a fixed amount to revalidate the downloads, but nothing has been confirmed so far.

Does 4K cost more on Disney Plus?

4K and HDR are included in a Disney Plus subscription as standard. Outside of its original Disney Plus content, Disney Plus allows you to watch all of the Star Wars films and all the classic Disney animation films, from The Little Mermaid onwards, in glorious Ultra HD.
