About
In 1955, my father Herbert Barker founded H Barker & Son, a local building contractor based in Bury, Lancashire. At the age of 21, I became a partner in what has become a trusted, reliable business that has been established for over 50 years. Now known as J&C Barker Builders Ltd, the values of the business remain the same: choice, value & high quality workmanship you can depend on.
Based in Bury, Lancashire, I cover a radius of approx. 25-30 miles, and further depending on the nature/duration of the job.

Jim installed some airbricks to address condensation issues in my loft. He met with me initially to assess the job, then provided a very reasonable quote. He then commenced work when we agreed, and completed the job to a very high standard - I could not be happier! Throughout Jim's communication was excellent, his work neat and tidy, and his manner affable. Highly recommended, and we would have him back for any building work. Thanks Jim!

Dear all, I had occasion to need to put some double glazing in an old property near Darwen and get a water ingress problem sorted out. I, however, live some 200 miles away in Suffolk and knew of no local builders. I found Jim through Which? trusted traders, read the reviews and decided that life is too short not travel hopefully. I rang Jim, explained what I needed and paid him to do a site survey and provide a quote. He communicated with me extremely well during this initial contact, explained that the water getting in was easily and cheaply fixed (how many other builders do you know who would have reported this?) and provided me with a reasonable quote for the work and fitting the new double glazing and doors. He was also extremely helpful in getting the necessary planning permission. Jim then proposed a timescale, which was very reasonable, and we agreed that the job should go ahead. The job was completed exactly when Jim said it would be, with no hidden extras in terms of cost. He also subsequently helped with the planning department when they overlooked sending us the completion certificate. When I spoke to planning they were very complimentary over the standard of workmanship that they had found on inspection. To this day Jim and I have never met but I would have no hesitation in recommending him as I have found him to be a man of his word and a gentleman.

We hired Jim for a fencing job after reading his reviews here. We knew the job was tricky and awkward and had been putting off doing it for that reason. Jim came to weigh up the possibilities and came up with a good solution, which, although not cheap seemed to be the answer to the problem. The job was started when Jim had promised to come, and ended at the time he had forecast. Some adjustments to the original plan were proposed as the job progressed and problems became more apparent, but any changes were after full consultation, and did not involve any amendment to the quotation. The job was finished to a high standard and we are pleased with the result. we have no hesitation in recommending this trader.

Jim has done two jobs for us in the last three weeks. He repaired a leaking roof (which no longer leaks) and built a new, good-quality fence 2m high at the back of our garden, removing and replacing the old fence and concrete posts. He re-used the concrete base panels from the old fence because they were in a good condition. He always turned up when he said he would and worked hard all day. He is a very careful worker, thinks things through before he starts and always aims to do the best job he can. Also he explained each time what he was proposing to do. We are very pleased with the work he has done and have asked him to come back to do two more jobs for us. If you want a job doing properly, ask Jim.

I used Jim to replace a faulty lintel over a lounge window and make good the damaged interior plasterwork. I was extremely satisfied with the job. He was always very punctual and the quality of his workmanship was first class. he is clearly an experienced builder who knows his trade; importantly he kept me fully appraised of the options and progress at every stage. Jim recently demolished an old concrete retaining wall and some steps leading to a greenhouse and built a new brick retaining wall and steps. He did an excellent job and is soon to do another job for me. Highly recommended.
