Our boiler developed a problem which meant it wasn’t switching on and because it's a combi boiler we had no heating or hot water. I phoned S&C and told them the two fault codes. I was told the electrodes needed replacing and they would order them. The electrodes arrived a few days later and the engineer installed them. The boiler came on and he left, and 30 minutes later it stopped working again. I phoned S&C who washed their hands of the problem and advised me to contact the boilers manufacturer (Vaillant). A Vaillant engineer came out a few days later. He checked the fault codes, stored in memory on the boiler, and quickly diagnosed the problem as a faulty gas valve. The gas valve was changed and the boiler has worked perfectly ever since. Subsequently, we received an invoice from S&C for £102. I emailed them and suggested that as they had not fixed the boiler they should consider giving us a discount. This they refused to do. They deny I told them both fault codes over the phone. I know I told them both codes but I can’t prove it. Even so, the two fault codes were displayed on the boilers screen and they are stored in memory and can easily be accessed by a competent engineer. The S&C engineer who attended failed to diagnose the problem. He just wanted to change the part and get out fast. I don't think the S&C engineer knew how to fault the boiler and they should not have taken the job. Needless to say, I will NEVER use them again.

I am sorry you were not satisfied with our service. According to the notes on your file you notified us of a F28 Fault, an Electrode Fault. No other Fault Code was reported, if it had the necessary parts would have been ordered. Our company ethos is to cause the least amount of expense to customers, wherever possible. We ordered the Electrodes for the engineer’s appointment. The engineer installed them, and the boiler fired up with no other Fault Code showing. Boilers will continue to go to a fault code if there is another part that has failed. Checks and tests were done and the boiler was left in working order. When we received a phone call from you a few hours later we were told the boiler had failed. The engineer was contacted and he explained the fan was noisy and the diverter valve slow to change over. Both parts are expensive to replace and we advised it would be cheaper for you to get a one-off call out with Valiant. Also, as the boiler is a combination, and you were without heating and hot water, Valiant would be able to resolve the problem quicker, they carry parts, we would have to visit, diagnose and then order the parts, with the current crisis this might have delayed fixing and could potentially have cost you more than using Valiant. We did not discount our invoice as we did repair the original fault. Unfortunately, as with cars, when a boiler gets old replacing one part can lead to another part failing. Again, we apologise you were not satisfied.

Company staff arrived promptly, carried out the work in full compliance with Covid19 protocol and left the site clean and tidy. Southgate and Culham replaced our aging oil boiler with a Worcester Bosch unit and did an excellent job from start to finish. Throughout the two day job they were friendly, efficient and courteous. We decided to redesign our utility room where the new boiler was going to go and Kevin was really helpful with pipework routing to make the new room easy to tile and paint, nothing was too much trouble. Will definitely use again for servicing and future works. Would recommend highly.

Our hot water expansion tank sprung a leak overnight and soaked everything including the carpeted area next to the hot water cylinder. Contacted Southgate & Culham and explained the problem and how urgently we needed it fixed. They came out that day and not only fixed the problem, but identified previous plumbing mistakes that caused the expansion tank problem. What an amazing couple - Kevin on the installation, Nikki (mostly) in the office and on occasion coming over to lend a hand, and tutor me in the finer points of my smart system. I had a complete new heating system put into a newly connected gas supply in a big older house. The house threw up a few unexpected challenges and Kevin - a true problem solver and lateral thinker - came up with some very clever solutions to deal with them. Kevin also deftly minimised the disruption, kept me in hot water throughout through clever phasing of the work and finished ahead of time. Above all they are both really lovely people with very high standards -considerate, thoughtful and knowledgeable. When I found myself in an unrelated crisis, they were quick with suggestions and offers of help. I found Southgate & Culham through the Which? trusted traders site, and I could not have found anyone anywhere that I could trust more. I am a single older woman and a long-standing member of Which? and am very grateful to have been able to rely upon their expertise, their local knowledge, and their kindness. I cannot recommend them highly enough. And I love my new heating system, which delivers everything Kevin said it would. My dad would approve of him.

Having found Southgate and Culham's name on the Weissman website I left a message on their answering machine. I was rung back within 30 minutes and was able to arrange a boiler service within 2 weeks. I had been somewhat concerned due to the Covid situation but the service was carried to our complete satisfaction and in a safe manner. In view of this, we went ahead with a toilet fitting which we had been putting of for nearly 12 months. Again the work was carried out in a friendly, competent manner and I would have no hesitation in recommending them.

Had way too many quotes from various suppliers (my mistake!) offering different solutions for replacement of our leaking boiler. Didn't think an external boiler would be within our budget and was told by one supplier it couldn't be done! Southgate and Culham explained everything in plain English and came across as honest and trustworthy people so they got the job. Great work, a tidy installation and we've never been warmer, plus the hot water tank finally fills up properly and has not run out once, so we are well pleased. Definitely recommend and they will be getting the service work too.

Really poor job, twice

I've used S&C for years but their recent performance has been very disappointing. Replaced a shower valve and left the new unit stuck on with silicone sealant - explanation was that " all showers are 155mm spacing" This is untrue as I found many online. Fixed this "at their expense" after initially arguing it was the best that could be done. Replaced a hot water cylinder - left us overnight with no hot water (immersion set to minimum) and shower not connected as this "would take too long" ( were going to two breakdowns) plus a leaking joint on the hot water pipe. Returned the next day and left us with no hot water from the central heating. This they claimed was an existing fault, even though it was working fine before. A separate electrician called on Monday and fixed the issue as a defective "quick connector" had been used. Earth bonding had been removed whilst replacing stop cock. S&C claim this was already disconnected even though I have a photo taken before their work. It is dangerous to not connect earth bonding. This repaired by the electrician on Monday. Have used them for 4 boiler replacements plus other work in the past, but having to argue to get a resolution is draining. A simple apology and fixing the issue would be fine - not excuses like "it was already like that" "it's the best that could be done as no smaller valves exist" "it will take too long to connect the shower" The faults were fixed at their expense, which is only to be expected and not a virtue.

Hi, After calling the company that installed my boiler with no response for two days. I found this company, Southgate & Culham Ltd from the Worcester-Bosch website. My central heating system broke down and I call the company and Nikki who answered the call was nice and friendly. The engineer would be with you, within an hour. When I told her what the problem was I had with the system, she knew what the fault was and check that the engineer had the part on board before sending him out, which was great, because the the engineer was able to change the broken part and resolved the problem satisfactorily. Been using Southgate & Culham for four years, having been recommended to us by the previous owners of our house, who had used them for boiler servicing for at least eight years previously. We contacted them mid-December as an emergency because our previous boiler, installed when the house was built, had failed completely, resulting in the need for a replacement. They had the new boiler installed before Christmas. Very conscientious and experienced team. Turned up when promised, meticulously tidy and kept the work areas spotless throughout the job. Boiler works well and the house has never been so warm!

Finally, a Plumbing & Heating company with Morals, Scruples & Principles who provide a 5 Star Impeccable Service with Excellent Customer Care & Excellent Customer Service Wayne arrived early to carry out:- Two Radiator changes along with two TRV/Lockshield sets Six TRV/Lockshield set changes Tighten Mono Mixer Tap on Kitchen Sink Wayne removed his shoes upon arrival (which is always a good sign that a Tradesman respects your home) & placed covers under the Radiators to be removed. He worked incredibly fast & was clean & tidy throughout the house & even hoovered! Wayne was friendly, very polite & courteous with excellent people skills. He is very knowledgable & answered all my questions I asked him to look at & carry out additional works if he had time:- a) Hallway Radiator change b) Replace & Redirect Condensate Pipe to new Combi Boiler (Worcester Bosch Greenstar 30i) which had been fitted by another company a week earlier c) Check Boiler Flue in Loft & Roof Nothing was too much trouble & he carried out the additional checks & work very quickly. I have used numerous Plumbing & Heating companies throughout the UK & Abroad for Hospitality Venues & Homes & Wayne is one of the best Plumbing & Heating Engineers I have ever seen. As a Which member, I found Southgate & Culham on the Which? Trusted Trader website. After reading the reviews & then viewing their website, I first phoned the company on 12.11.20 for a quote to carry out:- 2 x Radiator / TRV / Lockshield changes and 6 x TRV / Lockshield changes. Spoke to a very friendly helpful lady called Nikki, who gave me a verbal quote straight away. This was confirmed by email the next day & received by post two days later. I accepted the quote, which was very competitive & thorough. Then had further communication by phone & email. The work was initially booked for 10.12.20 which unfortunately I had to change to 18.12.20. I also added some additional work. Nothing was too much trouble for Nikki, who is very professional & knowledgeable. She is very polite & courteous with excellent customer care & people skills. Having dealt with numerous Plumbing & Heating companies over the years, both professionally & for my own home use, throughout the UK, I have to say dealing with Southgate & Culham is a very welcome breath of fresh air!

Thermostatic Radiator valve replacement.

Two out of eight valves had developed faults after 30-35 years service resulting in rhythmic rumblings, clatter and a cold radiator. I requested renewal of them all. This needed total drain down followed by recharging with corrosion inhibitor. While conducting a full heat test, Kevin discovered that a heating zone valve was also faulty causing failure of the boiler to start. This had manifested as an untraceable intermittent fault some weeks earlier, so I was very pleased to have this fixed at the same time. The work was carried out to the highest standard on the agreed date and the cost fell within expected parameters. Kevin was very careful to observe Pandemic protocol throughout the visit and left the house clean and tidy. We kept out of the way in the one room without thermostatic valves, kept warm with a portable electric heater! There has been no further problems with radiators following the visit. I have used this company for many years and always found them to be very helpful and efficient, I would not hesitate to provide a recommendation.

Right from our first phone conversation with Nikki in the office, to our site inspection and finally, installation, we have received prompt and courteous service. Kevin and Wayne carried out the installation, they answered our questions and queries and were polite. They arrived on time, on the day arranged and made sure our water supply was only off for the minimal time. After the installation we had a small query, and our email was promptly responded to. Make no mistake, this is what good looks like. Kevin and his team go the extra mile and don't rest until the problem is fixed. Having slowly been losing hot water pressure and temperature, a detailed investigation yielded a couple of issues, and a new pressurized cylinder was installed as an emergency job in a matter of days. They have previously also replaced our oil boiler. The onsite team are approachable and friendly, as is Nikki who works in the office.

Faced with an emergency, we were very grateful to have discovered such an efficient, knowledgeable, competent and helpful company. We were very satisfied with all aspects of their service and highly recommend Southgate & Culham, Stowmarket. We had literally just completed the purchase of our new home and had no experience at all of oil fired central heating. Almost immediately we encountered three problems: a cold house; a Honeywell CM927 wireless thermostat control with a dead, blank screen - inoperable despite changing batteries; and overwhelming fumes in the room where the Worcester Heatslave II 25/32 combi boiler was located. Panic! Scrambling through the papers left by previous owners, and checking the service records at the back of the manual, we saw Southgate & Culham had carried out the original installation and the annual servicing until recent years. A phone call later and we were reassured that, at the very least, things would be made safe that day, and if at all possible, fixed too. The lovely engineer arrived, and worked quietly and competently - explaining exactly what the faults were, and what he was doing to fix them (including the annual service). At the end, the system was throughly tested, its operation throughly explained - including how to check the oil tank level, and what to do in any future emergency. He even helped us navigate an unfamiliar control for some under-floor electric heating. Brilliant service!

Needing to replace our aged gas boiler we had several companies quote for the work and were advised, as we have a water softener, that we should fit a Viessmann boiler. Another problem was that the boiler had to fit into the existing cupboard. We phoned Viessmann who recommended Southgate and Culham so we asked them to quote. They were prompt, took on board and solved the fitting problems and also answered our subsequent telephone queries promptly. The engineer arrived on time, did an excellent job including moving the flue and making good the brickwork. The job was finished in the day and the kitchen was left clean and tidy. We would have no hesitation in recommending Southgate and Culham.

Supply and install replacement top immersion in cylinder

Immersion heater appeared to have failed, however on first visit the engineer reported a loose electrical connection which on tightening appeared to restore working order. He was reluctant to incur my expense of changing it if not really necessary, so by agreement he left it in. There was no hot water next day so it was concluded to be an intermittent fault and he was asked to re-attend which he did a week later. This was entirely acceptable as heating water was possible by using the oil-fired boiler on water only as the alternative fuel. Upon his second visit the engineer replaced the heater and showed me the faulty one. The internal element casing was split in two places! I was pleased with the account when it arrived as I was only charged for one call-out fee. Good, thoughtful service all round.

Replacement Boiler - Excellent and Professional from Start to Finish

I needed a replacement boiler due to mine developing a water leak. I had 1 quote from my previous servicing provider. Kevin came on the same day that I called to do the quotation, he provided a brochure and explained everything that would be required very clearly. He also informed me that his business was "Worcester Boiler" accredited installers which meant that I would get a 7 year Boiler Warrantee (unlike my previous suppler where it would only be 5 years). The written quote arrived on the day he said and it was very detailed and comprehensive. I called to accept the quote and was only required to pay a 10% deposit with the balance on completion, my previous supplier required 50% deposit. The installation was scheduled for 4 day later. On the day of installation, I had to go out for 3 hours, Kevin arrived at the stated time and I left him to get on with the work, his colleague arriving with the equipment a short while afterwards. When I returned, they were well into the installation. Kevin explained that they had encountered a few issues and changed slightly the way they had originally planned the position of external components, which was better for me anyway. Everything was finished by mid-afternoon, all the controls and installation explained very clearly. The property was left clean and tidy. The entire experience was excellent; the Company was clear in their explanations, extremely professional and friendly, did exactly as they said and on time. 100% satisfied.

Installation of a Viessmann Vitodens 111-W Storage Combi Boiler

Our boiler failed and we wanted to update our system to an Unvented system. I had been recommended Viessmann boilers by a friend so got in touch. Kevin, from Southgate & Culham, came to review what we wanted and after hearing what we needed, suggested a better solution than I originally was going to go for. It meant we could get rid of the boiler from the kitchen completely and get everything into one unit in the airing cupboard upstairs. From that point everything went very well, from agreeing the price, installation date, the install and all follow up has been excellent. The install was completed in 2 days as agreed and everything was up and working. The quality of workmanship is very good and nothing was too much trouble for Kevin & Wayne in making sure we were happy with everything. We are delighted with the new system and I would thoroughly recommended Southgate & Culham.

Installation of a new domestic oil fired boiler

A site visit was paid by Kevin who readily explained options and made recommendations, all of which were patiently and clearly explained. This was followed by comprehensive quotes for either a standard or condenser boiler. A condenser boiler was ordered and Kevin and his colleague, Wayne, arrived promptly on the agreed day of installation and immediately set to work removing the old boiler. They both worked diligently throughout the day and the new boiler was up and running by late afternoon. On completion of the work they gave a good brief on the operation of the boiler and cleared the site of all detritus and packaging, including removal of the old boiler. Overall a thoroughly professional job carried out by competent and personable tradespersons. They were ably supported back in their office by Nikki, who made all the administrative arrangements. I have no hesitation in highly recommending this company.

We first met Southgate and Culham when they were working for our daughter. They did a superb job there and being Worcester accredited came with excellent credentials. Following problems with a previous company, we were in need of a new boiler installation and pipe work make over. From the moment we rang Nikki for advice, we knew we were in safe hands. Although, because of their excellent service, the company is extremely busy, whenever I have telephoned Nikki has always been most helpful. As soon as we met Kevin to discuss our needs we had full confidence that our installation would meet our requirements and the installation be fitted efficiently and effectively. They were with us three full days, they needed to pop back for a short while on the fourth day to fine tune this system as they found another issue from previously pipe work, not their work, which needed rectifying. They fixed this additional fault with no problem. Kevin and Wayne have an excellent working relationship and they were a delight to have them work for us. Neat, tidy and excellent workmanship. We would highly recommend them for any work needing Heating Engineers.

We've used Southgate and Culham for many years now, starting with a new boiler installation at our previous house in 2015. In March 2019 the boiler in our current house died and Kevin and the team replaced it for us. We are limited for space where the boiler would have to be inside the house, so Kevin suggested an external boiler. This worked beautifully - and gave us added cupboard space in the kitchen as well, result! Every time we have dealt with them the outcome is the same, whether it's a full installation or a service. Their prices are very reasonable for the quality of work, parts and service, they are unfailingly cheerful and helpful and they are always looking for ways to do a more efficient job and, if possible, save the customer unnecessary expense. We know that they are just an email or a phone call away and we have never had any delays from them at all. They are also happy to offer advice even if it doesn't end up leading to work for them. We trust them completely and very much enjoy having them working in our home. Kevin has just completed the first service on our outside boiler and, as always, everything ran beautifully.

Second to None for Good Efficient Service in Replacing Oil Boiler

We recently had our old oil boiler serviced and several expensive spare parts replaced. Shortly afterward, unfortunately, decided to gurgle for a few days and then completely gave up the ghost. Understandably due to the current health situation, it seemed to be impossible to get anyone to come out to see what the problem was until we contacted Southgate and Culham. On hearing that we had no heating or hot water, and the emersion heater did not work either, despite it being a very busy period Nikki arranged for an engineer to call within a few days. As repairing the boiler was no longer an option we decided to have it totally replaced. All the team pulled out all the stops to get us a quote and fit the new boiler within a week from initially diagnosing the problem. The engineers arrived four days after the call out, Kevin and Wayne, who were both very friendly and professional and adhered to the current recommendations regarding COVID 19. The boiler was fitted and the degree of efficiency and competency was second to none. We would not hesitate to recommend this firm and their phone number is definitely now on our speed dial.

Unable to turn to heat off and house getting like a sauna. Phoned at about 10 am and the engineer was with us by 5 pm. Problems identified very quickly. Very professional company - Kevin visited promptly and advised on best way to replace our failed gas boiler system with our preferred choice of Wissemann boiler and their quote was similar to those of several other firms but with a higher quality product. Date arranged, Wayne arrived bang on time and undertook the work extremely efficiently and was very neat and tidy. Kevin came along the following date and installed the new Hive controller and commissioned the system which all worked first time without issues. Whole job complete in under two days (other firms had quoted 3-4 days!). Great staff who did the job when arranged, in the time agreed, for the price agreed and were totally professional - and threw in some free advice about the mother-in-laws heating problems as well ! 100% recommended

My 22 year old oil boiler needed to be replaced. This was discussed during a visit in February 2019 during which all differences the new condensing boiler would have were pointed out and their consequences. This was very helpful as it enabled me to be fully prepared for the 2-day removal/installation in June 2019. I was able to select the date to suit me. The on-site work was completed on time and to the agreed quotation. My home was left clean, neat and tidy. The old boiler, piping, packaging and other debris were all removed from site. Kevin and Wayne did an excellent job. The new installation is working well and much appreciated. Some minor residual details have just been notified and I have every confidence they will be corrected as I have traded with this company for over 10 years.

We had a site visit book but our boiler finally packed in so Southgate & Culham (Nikki) helped out by giving us a quote over the phone confirmed that our choice of boiler (Worcester Bosch ) were market leaders. Kevin then arrived 0n time to confirm all the details ,the quote came out cheaper than we though which in the light of our position (no hot water etc) was very refreshing. 3 days later Wayne the fitter arrived again on time and proceeded to fit our new boiler with no hassle or stress at any time just great re-assurance. The whole experience from start to finish has been 100% positive, and we feel very pleased to have been dealt with in such a totally professional way by a totally professional company.

I had originally booked in Southgate and Culham Ltd in for October but my boiler burst at the end of July ? I rang them immediately and they were extremely helpful, I was able to pay for the work through finance, and they started the work the following Monday! They fitted a new boiler, a new oil tank and all of the pipework. The woman who answered the phone spent half an hour talking through the issue with me and was so helpful, they were exceptionally clean and really helped me out. Huge thanks and highly recommended!
