Thomas Smith Heating and Cooling

After buying our new family home in June 2023, we embarked on a big renovation project with 3 goals: 1) to be warmer in Winter; 2) for less money and 3) reduce our carbon emissions. In addition to insulating the suspended wooden floors & walls, replacing old glazing and installing solar + batteries (8.6kW array & 30kW storage), the renovation included a total overhaul of the existing gas boiler, downstairs radiators and related pipework. On the heating side, we met with and had quotes from around five companies. None of them seemed to really 'get' what we were trying to achieve. And then we came across Thomas. Almost a year later (there was a lot of work! And Thomas had to wait for the ground floor to be lifted up in sections), we are the very proud owners and users of a beautiful (and ultra quiet & efficient Viessmann) ASHP, upgraded hot water cylinder, radiators and (insulated) pipework. (A big thank you also to the BUS Grant, fully managed by Thomas). Thomas is exceptional - both in terms of his technical knowledge but also the care and attention to detail. He takes the time to really understand the needs to find a 'best fit' solution. And I know that if there are any issues, he is always at the of the phone and ready to help. I'm looking forward to seeing how the new system peforms this Winter. So far, it's dramatically cut our DHW bills and I have no doubt we'll be warmer for (a lot) less money. And we're now fully disconnected from the gas :)

We were looking for a new company to service our Viessmann boiler, and happened upon Tom. He has done an excellent and thorough job, doing a far more comprehensive service than previous companies. A proper strip down of the boiler, fully tested, gas supply checked for leaks back at the meter, and thorough clean of our Magnacleanse filter. Very courteous throughout, taking great care to remove his shoes on frequent trips to get tools from his van. Then gave me some good advice on ASHP which I would be keen to progress with him in the near future.

It has been our very good fortune to have known and had the benefit of Tom’s support and experience for the past five years. Our very first visit was literally a life saver. We are a senior couple who for the three years prior to meeting Tom had subscribed to British Gas Homecare for emergency cover. December 21 2021, the very first time we made a call for help from Homecare they could not provide any engineer at all to restore our heating but during a long and frustrating telephone call the agent finally advised me that they had a network of ‘Heroes’, ex British Gas trained engineers, and she would try to contact one for me. Well ‘Hero’ was absolutely right. Tom Arrived within the hour and forty minutes later we were up and running again. To have the support and re-assurance of having a thoroughly professional engineer at our age is a considerable comfort especially as the times when I may be away from home and my wife is alone. Tom not only services our boiler regularly but has also fitted new radiators, particularly impressed with his freezing technique to shut off the water supply to the radiator in question and leave the rest of the system running. We have been delighted with all of Tom’s work for us and the prompt and considerate manner in which it is always carried out and if you are able to read all the other reviews you will clearly get the picture of a caring, courteous and thoroughly professional individual who I have no hesitation in highly recommending to you.

I have been regular customer of Tom’s for my annual boiler service for several years now. He is always friendly, on time and provides great updates. His work is always exemplary. We recently had an issue with our water heater, which he sorted out in no time at all, much to the relief of the whole family. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him! 5*

British Gas trained engineer now independent. Tom visited my elderly Mum in Law as she was having issues with her boiler, he completed a full service, corrected a couple of issues and it is now working perfectly. He arrived on time, was a genuinely nice guy, very professional, tidy and efficient, would highly recommend. He will now complete the annual service moving forward and be there should there be any problems...

British Gas trained engineer now independent. Tom installed a new boiler for us 5 years ago after quoting to repair the old one (which would have been cheaper but it was on its last legs). He has serviced it annually for us since then. Over the last weekend our heating failed. We were away, leaving our daughter home alone (!) He came out Monday morning, we trust him to access a spare key, and he fixed the problem for us inexpensively (replaced thermostat). He has done work for 5 or so of our neighbours in our neighbourhood WhatsApp group and all are delighted with his work.

Our insurance company cover had written off our boiler claiming it was beyond economic repair. We contact Thomas to provide a quote for a new boiler and off his own back asked to take a look at the boiler. He identified that it was only the fan which was broken, an easily attainable part that could be fitted quickly. He came back the next day, fitted the part and the boiler was up and running. It's rare to find a knowledgable and honest engineer these days. Someone who prioritises helping their customers over upselling. Highly recommended.

First came across Tom two years ago to rectify an installation by BG. If only I had used him to install both boiler and 6 radiators! Nothing was too much trouble and he went everywhere in our bungalow to check and put right the faults that had occurred by said company. It is now a no brainer to use him to service our boiler and system each time it is required He came again this time, a bit sooner the necessary, after yet another problem arose from an independent plumber changing a washer.. Tom is conscientious hardworking and dedicated to doing the best job.. He charges a very reasonable price and I would always contact him if I have issues as he always finds time to sort out any problems for us as soon as contacted. Lovely to know tradesman like Tom still exist

I have been using Tom for my annual boiler and unvented water system service for several years now. He is friendly, on time and has great communications. His work is also reliable and efficient. He is also on hand straight away should things go wrong. I'll be using Tom as long as he is trading and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him!

Having browsed online for a heating engineer to service my warm air system, I found Thomas Smith Heating and Cooling. He came out the next day as i had no hot water. The service was very much needed and he was very thorough and found some other problems, thermostat not regulating and air flow duct that had been taped up. I was very grateful for his knowledge and determination to resolve these problems. I have booked him to service my unit in the future.

We found Tom many years ago. Our heating system is a legacy from the original owners so it can be a bit tricky and temperamental. He is just great — polite, responsive, friendly, brilliant at his job (we have really high standards but we are delighted every time). Yesterday night at bedtime I realised our boiler had packed up. 10am this morning we’re back up and running. You just don’t get better service anyway and from such a nice person. We even asked him to help one of our elderly neighbours when her heating broke during the winter and he solved it in no time. In short, I just can’t recommend Tom highly enough.

My annual boiler/heating service was due in Feb but I had to contact Tom to come a month sooner as the pressure adjusting switch on the boiler had jammed. He kindly fitted me in sooner and service & switch repair were carried out quickly and efficiently. I would be happy to recommend him to all as a woman dealing with workmen one can sometimes be a bit wary but Tom was excellent.
