But the travel company’s bread and butter is its guided walking holidays throughout the UK, where it owns 16 country houses, including a mansion on the banks of Derwentwater in the Lake District.

Hf Holidays is a Which? Recommended Provider (WRP), which means that as well as being one of the most highly rated holiday firms in our survey it has also guaranteed to offer a full refund, or free changes, if the Foreign Office (FCDO) changes its advice about your destination.

It has also promised that in 2024 it won’t apply any additional surcharges to holidays that have already been booked.

Specialising in small-group guided walking holidays, this professional outfit – with 100 years’ experience – offers everything from a gentle amble to more challenging mountain treks. For those looking for something a little different, there are special-interest holidays – suitable for painters, bridge lovers and musicians – with plenty of sightseeing and wildlife watching thrown in. Though it offers trips in more than 40 countries, most of its customers in our survey stayed in the UK. 

HF Holidays received very strong customer scores of 87% in both the escorted tours and walking holidays categories. With solid four-star ratings across the board, HF Holidays finished top of our walking holidays table. 

Those who used HF Holidays praised the ‘excellent, friendly, knowledgeable and professional guides’. Customers were impressed that HF Holidays considered different individuals' fitness levels by offering ‘options to opt in, opt out or shorten the walk’. HF Holidays also benefited from offering its own accommodation that is ‘excellent’. It owns 16 country houses, including a mansion on the banks of Derwentwater in the Lake District.
