There aren’t many businesses that would give away their services free of charge at Christmas.

But that’s exactly what Derbyshire-based Lords Roofing did over the festive period, exchanging roof repairs for donations to charity.

The team’s efforts – which saw them carry out 16 jobs in just two days – caught the eyes of our judges and helped the company to take the award this month.

‘Spur-of-the-moment’ plan

The charity donation idea came suddenly to the company’s owner Liam Anderson while he was out on the road.

‘It was just one of those spur-of-the-moment things,’ he said. ‘I just pulled over and wrote the idea down. I didn’t think about it too much. But the feedback from our customers was amazing.’

Over a two-day period, customers nominated their favourite charities and gave whatever they could afford in a sealed envelope. From the nominated charities, Liam picked a winnng name out of a hat, and all proceeds went to Ashgate Hospicecare.

‘For people who struggled over Christmas and didn’t have much money, this was a way to help them out,’ Liam explained.

Up on the roof

Liam first got into the building trade after leaving school, and always enjoyed working on the roofs of the houses he was building.

Just over two years ago, he took the plunge and set up his own roofing business, joining Trusted Traders shortly afterwards.

‘I wanted to join the best scheme going for traders,’ Liam told us. ‘So I did some research and joined Trusted Traders. It’s been brilliant. My account manager is amazing and so helpful, giving me advice.’

The business, which also employs some of Liam’s family members, has since racked up an impressive set of reviews on the Trusted Traders site, with customers praising the team’s friendliness, professional service and reliability.

The award win came as a welcome surprise. ‘I’m really, really happy,’ Liam said. ‘You should have seen me. I couldn’t it believe it, as I know so many people go for it.’

Liam, who took part in Dry January, is now planning to raise a toast to celebrate his award. Congratulations to him and the Lords Roofing team, the winners of February’s Trusted Trader of the Month.
