About

Traditional standards. Traditional tradesman. Traditional service.
Starting with a five-year boat building apprenticeship, followed by a further two years training as a wood machinist, I have spent most of my adult life working with wood. Having completed my apprenticeship, I went on to spend four years working for a small independent company restoring furniture and manufacturing reproduction antique clocks. I later moved into a therapeutic teaching environment and spent ten years passing on my skills. For the last fifteen years I have been a self-employed sole trader, so in total I have over thirty years’ experience as a professional carpenter in Southampton. I also serve Winchester, Romsey, The New Forest and Waterside, Eastleigh, and Salisbury.

Ian and Vicky provided a thoroughly professional service throughout. They responded quickly to our enquiry and provided a quote up front for the supply and fitting of new exterior door and window cill to outbuilding. They arrived promptly on the day of commencement and did a great job. Courteous and polite throughout. Would not hesitate to use them again or recommend them to others.

After having difficulty in finding someone with experience who was able to repair our porch (some of our external wood, including posts had become rotten) we came across Ian Stone and we are very glad that we did. He attended the property to carry out an initial assessment and an estimate as to his fees which were entirely accurate. He came at the dates and times agreed and provided feedback at the end of day one (it was a two day job). Professional and courteous throughout made him a pleasure to deal with. We will certainly instruct Ian Stone again when we need further carpentry work to be undertaken.

Make and install wooden casement window
Customer Service

Ian Stone immediately identified where water, through capillary action, had caused wet rot in a wooden casement window. The estimate given remained the final price despite challenges in removing the first-floor window. A machined replacement was installed that matched the original profile exactly. Old fashioned respect for a client’s property was observed including the use of dust sheets throughout. Upon completion, preventative measures to avoid the problem recurring were helpfully given together with details of products to use. Communication throughout was prompt from answering questions to schedule confirmation. I unreservedly recommend Ian Stone as a highly skilful, knowledgeable and reliable professional.

Ian has done numerous work for us over the the last 18 months including bespoke double glazed timber framed windows, restoration of our original Edwardian windows and most recently a bespoke built in shaker style utility cupboard. Ian is incredibly reliable, punctual, professional and friendly but also likes to crack on and get the job done within the time frame he specifies. His estimates have always been accurate and the quality of his work is excellent. He has also done window repair work for our neighbours over the last couple of decades which is where we got our recommendation. I can't recommend him highly enough and will continue to go to him for all of our future window, woodwork projects.

Exceptionally helpful.
Ian Stone is an experienced carpenter who was able to help me firstly by being the only website I could find with professional advice on how to effectively repair my creaking stairs. The pictures are self explanatory and given Ian’s post on how he has repaired these stair cases along with photos of the completed job shows that some companies have the skills and knowledge to effectively solve this problem without just installing new stairs at a far greater cost and with huge disruption. I filled in Ian’s contact me form and he called me 2 hours later, I was gobsmacked to say the least. I may be too far for Ian to come and fix my stairs however the advice I have been given was first class. Given Ian’s knowledge I would have had no hesitation in setting him on had he been able to help me. All the same he was exceptionally helpful. Thank you Ian.

Mr Stone was asked to work on a solution to design and install some storage boxes in our porch. He designed a solution and offered it for our approval, and when we gave it he carried out the work to a very high standard. It had to be tough and in marine ply as it was to stand outside. He went away and he developed the solution in his own workshop and created 2 boxes to the specifications he had agreed with us. He then brought them to us and they fitted perfectly into the gaps. Since then they have performed exactly to what was needed.

Bathroom Door Repair

Have used Ian Stone several times previously and been delighted with his work. Ian, at short notice , generously made time to attend on a Bank Holiday Monday, our property to repair a bathroom door that was hanging off its hinges, preventing the door from being closed and so unable to set the house alarm system. Repair was quickly and professionally carried out with his usual care and courtesy. As always, we can thoroughly recommend Ian wholeheartedly.

I had requested a pair of Shaker style doors to be made to replace an existing ugly single door. Ian understood exactly what I wanted. I had expected to have to wait a while as like most good tradesmen he was very busy, however a job was cancelled due to client illness and our job was fitted in. Communication was very good throughout. The doors are extremely well made and just what we wanted. They have been well fitted and everything was very professional and completely mess free. We’re delighted with the doors and would highly recommend Ian’s work.

It came as no surprise to discover that Ian Stone’s services are in high demand. He is a fine craftsman with a keen eye for detail and who works to exceptional standards of professionalism. Ian’s initial quote was detailed and reasonable and has been respected to the end. Ian carried out the work on our late Victorian home with absolute efficiency taking notice of our requests and at every moment respecting the restrictions that COVID is placing on everyone. It was also refreshing to know that all the work would be sympathetic to the age and style of the property, something that in our experience is not always a given. All work was completed on time with the house being left immaculate at the end of every working day. Ian is a personable man who was a pleasure to have working in our home. If you are seeking high quality restoration work that is fairly priced then look no further; you will be fortunate to hire such an able and congenial tradesman.
