Gardens Direct was formed by Alexander Brothers to offer a creative, competitive and high quality garden design and landscaping service operating throughout Hertfordshire, Essex and the North London area. Alexander is well "rooted" in the gardening industry considering he grew up at his parent's garden center "Roots & Shoots", Upminster, Essex. While working at the garden center, Alexander attended Writtle (Chelmsford) Horticultural College and studied Garden Design. The completion of the course qualified Alexander with a National Diploma in Garden Design with distinction. We have have been creating dream Gardens for over 15 years and are specialists in all aspects of Garden Design and Landscaping including: Decking, Fencing, Driveways, Lawns, Creative Planting, Patios, Paving, Walls, Brickwork, Water features, Ponds and Waterfalls.

Remodelling of garden area
A previously barren piece of ground, where trees had been removed, was remodelled to include three new raised beds, two flower borders, gravel paths and a small hard standing/seating area as well as new wooden fencing set between concrete posts. Some rotting sleepers were also replaced with low brick walls. All work was carried out carefully, tidily and efficiently to our agreed spec and timetable. The finished job looks great and we are very pleased with it.

Alex and Ben were an amazing team. Alex first came to my garden to assess what works needed to be done. He was able to give suggestions as well as listen to what I really wanted. The quote was accurate and given I made no changes to the initial plan, there were no further changes to the cost of the works. Though some would argue he is on the pricier side, I personally thought it is was worth every penny. The work was completed to a very high standard and there was constant communication throughout and we had no troubles. I highly recommend Alex and Ben - you are in safe hands!

I needed to start again with my back garden, which had become overgrown and neglected. I called Alex and he came over to see the garden and asked me what I wanted. I wasn’t sure so we bounced a few ideas around and slowly a design began to take shape. I had a couple of trees removed and Alex and Josh worked with a small digger to reshape the landscape. A key requirement for me was to make the garden more manageable because I am no longer able to carry out any heavy tasks like digging. Alex talked me through each stage and I felt fully involved with the project. I now have a beautiful circular lawn with small flowerbeds and patio on one side of the garden with four raised beds for vegetables and a greenhouse on the other side. I also have new pathways and patio finished with sandstone paving. The result is stunning. It’s just what I wanted and a lot more. I can’t praise Alex and Josh more. They did a fantastic job!

Alex and Josh did a fantastic job over two days fitting our new fence. They were incredibly friendly and professional. Alex talked us through the job at the start, and reassured all plants and trees around the fencing would be delicately preserved which they were. The finishing was really smart, and they made a tough job that required a lot of digging look easy!

Alex has just completed a total garden reconstruction for us and we are absolutely thrilled. From our first appointment with him to discuss plans, to the moment the garden was finished, Alex was a pleasure to deal with. He was most helpful with regard to designing our garden and was also very open to suggestions, with nothing being too much trouble (he even came to the garden centre with me on numerous occasions to buy plants!). Alex was reliable and extremely conscientious and his eye for detail was great and the finished garden, is everything we had hoped it would be. We needed shed demolition, a new sandstone patio, new fencing and demolition/ re-sizing of our raised beds. Alex was very clear in his quotes and the work this represented, leaving no ambiguity about the work that was going to be done. We are really pleased with the standard of his finish and the materials used - a lot of care has been taken to ensure the patio is beautifully flat! His design approach was fluid and quite happily responded to last minute design changes, he also was clear if this was not on the original pricing before going ahead, so no surprises in the final bill. I would gladly use Alex's services again.

After struggling to get replies or any decent quotes or suggestions from landscape gardeners for the back garden of our new home in a new development, we finally found Alex via the Which website. Gardens Direct has a good, clear website with a video of Alex presenting his company and examples of his excellent work. Alex came here personally to give us a quote and, not really knowing anything about gardens or exactly what we wanted, we really appreciated his excellent suggestions and the precise quote with a detailed drawing of the concept plan for the new garden, which included extended paving stones, artificial lawns and a seating area with an arbour seat. He drew up a contract for the work, started on time, finished on time, and proved to be very professional, hard-working and reliable. The result was amazing. We were happy to plan a few months ahead, which is a good idea as, not surprisingly, he gets booked up quickly. We highly recommend Alex and Gardens Direct.

This is the second time we have used Alex; first to build a wall at the front of the house and re- plant the border and more recently to build a wall in the back garden, plant a border and lay a base for a log cabin. Both times we have been so pleased with the results; couldn't ask for more. He is an extremely professional landscape gardener who takes pride in producing the best result he can. He will offer excellent advice which only a fool would ignore. We will definitely use his services again to redo the patio and lay the lawn in the autumn. I would recommend him to anyone with garden work to be done. The results are excellent and he is extremely competitive in his prices.

Alex and team recently completed a major overhaul of our rear garden, this included fencing, artificial grass, and a new patio area. We had some designs in mind but when Alex came to survey the job, he pointed out some improvements which made a massive difference to the outlook on the finished job. Alex and his son worked extremely hard - under very trying circumstances - to build us a new patio. He also went the "extra mile" by hand cutting stones for the circle, due to a limited choice of colours offered by the suppliers. There was no extra charge for this.
