We had J W Scudder Roofing Ltd in to do a roof valley repair and I cannot speak highly enough about this company. After experiencing an exhausting search for an honest reliable roofing company it was a pleasure to meet this family firm. They quickly and simply explained, priced (and kept to the price), as well as completed the work at a very good speed, as well as slotting us in as an emergency, as we had water leaking into a bedroom whenever it rained. Excellent work, Excellent people, they are now our goto roofers. Thank goodness for which trusted traders and their recommendations.

This is a family run business which is friendly and highly professional. Unlike other companies I contacted they return your phone calls and turn up at the time arranged. John was very helpful and explained the whole process. His son completed the work along with two employees. He gave me an update of the progress each day. They were all extremely polite and friendly. They carried on working in extremely cold weather and rain. At the end of each day they left everything very neat and tidy. The quotation was very reasonable and matched the final price. I would definitely recommend them.

John Scudder ,father, came to view my property and give a quote for installing soffits,fascia and new downpipe etc. He answered all my questions thoroughly. His quote was very reasonable. The work was carried out by son,John,and two colleagues. They worked very hard ,and quickly,and efficiently, with excellent communication from John,as to how things were going,and answering any questions. They were cheerful and polite. We asked them to include another job we had forgotten to mention before ( refelting and installing some lead on top of a window). John explained the alternatives for doing the job and recommended the best and most cost effective way, at a very reasonable price,which we agreed,and the job was excellent. The whole job was excellent! Nothing was too much trouble and with friendly good humour. Excellent customer service. We recommend them highly.

I moved into the house in 1998 and was told at that time that the roof would need replacing It has survived a further 27 years with repairs and the original roof was not lined so you could see the sky when tiles slipped off. I had researched what I wanted and knew the Welsh slates where more costly but This was important to me I wanted a local reliable company to do the job and provide aftercare, I met with 7 roofers and two stood out. This company is small so they are the people on the job, I felt they were trustworthy and had excellent reviews I now can confirm that they are competitively priced with no hidden expenses, the quote was descriptive and covered all the points I raised and this included adding extra insulation and boarding the roof. Communication and updating me was excellent. Cleanliness, tidiness and quality of work - Outstanding The job entailed removing all of the roof and lower roofs, disposing of this along with wooden buttons. Laying the new roof, wider guttering and grey ridge tiles The job happened seamlessly and for me was stress free A great company and a fabulous job

We had a new roof fitted. The work was completed in only 4 days The team worked hard and completed the job before we expected. The team were polite, helpful and listened to our requests and delivered them. John Scudder was helpful and knowledgeable from our first discussions of the work. He was easy to communicate with - accepting that you won't always get through to a busy roofer immediately, every time, and he then called me back. I received a written quotation and the work was completed on time and at the quotation price. We had lost many ridge tiles during high winds, and lost a few further tiles. The roof leaked. A new dry system was fitted entirely satisfactorily but exposed a few failings in the original tiling, done before we bought the house. Gaps below the top rows of tiles had been partially hidden by excess mortar used to fix the ridge tiles that subsequently failed in the very high winds. John and I discussed options and the additional work was then quoted for and carried out. John's son was on site with a small team during the work and was also very friendly, helpful, and happy to discuss options. Roofing is never cheap but I believe the cost was reasonable for a large roof that needed extensive scaffolding.

From the moment of first contact with Scudder Roofing, the service was excellent. John explained everything clearly and in detail and the quote was competitive. I was dreading the stress of having a completely new roof but the company organised everything efficiently (skip/scaffolding etc) Johns son and the other two roofers worked extremely hard every day and it was clear that they took great pride in their work and in attention to detail. My house is nearly 100 years old and the roof was in very poor condition. In Nov 22, I had a very bad leak. John did an inspection of the roof and also offered some very good advice. Some remedial work was done initially to prevent any further damage until a new roof could be fitted. The work was done to a very high standard and in a short period of time. They went out of their way to ensure that everything was done well. All the team were very polite and always tidied up after a day's work. They have excellent credentials, and all work is guaranteed. I would highly recommend them.

Shortages in the supply of tiles delayed the work, but the price was held to the original quote and estimate. The team was discreet and a pleasure to have around. From the initial point of contact through to completion John and his team have been superb. They installed a new roof, soffit, fascia, gutters, downpipes, loft insulation and boarding for us. They also came out and did some temporary repairs for my peace of mind whilst I was waiting for the full installation to take place. The guys worked in challenging weather conditions and kept me informed the whole way through. They were reliable and extremely hard working. They came in on time and on budget - they notified me of some additional work required to the chimney which wouldn’t have been visible until they were up there and provided costs prior to carrying out the work. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.

We asked JW Scudder roofing for a quote for a new tile roof and flat roof for our house. John visited and explained everything to us and seemed very professional and had a lot of experience. We were dreading having the roof replaced it had spray foam insulation but some tiles got damaged and were letting water in so needed replacing. In May I contacted 10 companies with NFRC competent persons accreditation and 5 quoted not only was John the most competitive but his terms were better too. John took great care and lots of time on his first visit to talk me through the process and the pros/cons of types of tiles and roofing methods, showed me accreditations and portfolio of work some of the grand houses and roofs they have worked on where beautiful – they are more than tradesmen they are craftsmen. John’s communication was excellent contacted us in Oct and popped over again to double check details of the job i.e. best tile colour to match in with our neighbours etc. He kept us informed re scaffolders skip etc. The work itself carried out by John Jnr and Jay was superb, it is only a small terrace house but I am under no illusion as to what a herculean task it was to rip out all that dreaded spray foam. They cracked on without a fuss, so polite, communicated everything that they were doing I was gob smacked that it only took them two days to get rid of it all/make watertight and little over a day to get all the tiles on. Scudders were aware we had a contingent budget in case of rotten wood, but we were not charged a penny over the quote, they were one hundred percent honest and straight. All paperwork promptly provided. Thanks so very much guys. Superstar roofers!

This is definitely one of the best experiences we've had in past few years. The entire process is really smooth. At the quote stage John Snr explained to me every details I need to know. Before the actual work we were well informed of the entire process, super clear communication. The team (with John Jnr and Jay) then did a really good job on the actual work, informed us the progress every day with everything cleaned up EOD. Since it's a fairly old house there are many piplines around, which required a lot of extra cut stuff. The team managed to make it which we really appreciate. First contacted John Scudder for a quote for a full roof replacement back in January, John came around on the arranged date and time, received the quote within a week of him attending the property, he did say to me that he wouldn’t be around until June at the earliest, which was fine with me. We was very happy with the quote, and as soon as we received the quote, I spoke to John, and said book me in, he came around on June the 7th and completed to my satisfaction on Wednesday the 15th of June, I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending JW Scudder roofing services to anyone. The company (J W Scudder Ltd) was recommended to me by a friend who used to be a scaffolder, now a delivery driver of building supplies. I met with Mr. Scudder (Snr) and agreed works to be carried out and cost. Because of commitments he made me aware that the work could not be carried out for several months. On the agreed date scaffolding was erected and skip deposited efficiently. His workforce arrived on time and work was completed in three days (much to my amazement). The quality of product and efficiency of work carried out was of the highest quality bearing in mind I have a degree of knowledge of building standards. These guys are really good. From the first meeting with John Sr, we knew they were going to be. Covid/Brexit caused all sorts of delays for builders, roofers, etc. including not being able to get stock. We were fine with the delays and John kept us informed throughout. When our turn came, John Jr and his apprentice turned up on time and were keen to get going. The brilliant thing is, once they start your roof, they keep going until they finish... so no going off to start another job halfway through. With this in mind, our whole roof took exactly the time we were told (one week) and at exactly the price that was given to us when we first spoke to John Sr. At the end of each day, John would tell us what they'd done and what the plan was for the next day. The good thing about this was, that we discussed a few extra bits of work, agreed any extra cost and then they just got on with it. Nothing seemed to be too problematic. John Jr's enthusiasm is quite infectious and we found ourselves getting quite unexpectedly excited (it is after all, a roof!) for the end result. When the work was completed, we were over the moon with how it had transformed our house from the glummest looking in our row, to by far the best looking. Can't recommend these guys enough. Cheers.

Great family run business. They gave us our quote and kept us fully informed of timings etc. and also came round to check on progress. They put our new main roof and porch roof on, they were a great team. We went for a grey slate roof, which we are really pleased with. Had new soffit, facia, guttering and downpipes as original ones not in a good state. Right from the start Mr Scudder stood out from the rest we approached: from first contact, site visit and quote which were were professional, timely, honest and straightforward. In the current difficult nationwide circumstances re: materials shortages/delays in being able to get materials/prices rising, I feel it is a real testament to them the job was completed as per the original quote and agreement. The actual work/finish is of the highest standard compared to what I’ve observed locally and the whole team were professional, polite, very helpful (fixed an aerial fitting which came loose during the process of the works) and tidy. Couldn’t ask for anything more. Already had a follow up/aftercare call and I’m in no doubt should there be any issue down the line they will be back to sort it as per the guarantee. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend if you want a top-quality job at a fair price. Can’t quite believe the difference it’s made to the look of the house either.

J W Scudder Roofing first did a new flat roof and fascia boards for us on our garage last summer in 2020. We were so impressed by John Snr, John Jnr and Jay’s workmanship and overall professionalism on it all, that we had absolutely no hesitation asking them to do a second, much larger job for us this summer in 2021. John Snr is a great communicator, keeping you informed and reassuring you of every step of the job along the way and is a consummate professional. John Jnr and Jay are a real pleasure to have around your house and nothing is a problem for them both. Our second job was to fit new soffits, fascia boards, gutters and downpipes all around our 1930's house. It was not an easy job and very labour intensive, but nothing was too hard or too much trouble for John Jnr and Jay and they tackled it each day with lots of communication and big smiles, even when we asked for some extra bits to be done. Their attention to detail is beyond meticulous and they go over and above to give you outstanding results and we have very high standards! If there was a Michelangelo of soffit work, John Jnr is the one, as parts of our job involved intricately cut, angled soffit work under the eaves of our front apex and underneath a bay window. We have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending this family run business – do yourself a big favour and book them for your job/s – you really won’t be disappointed.

John knew what needed doing, the best way to go about it, kept us informed throughout the process showing us photos of the roof what had been done and suggesting ways forward. He conducted the work in a most efficient way, with skip and scaffolding, supplies and a very hard working team seamlessly working together to get the job done in 2 days, they came on time, worked non stop, were polite, tidy and friendly. Even the skip was loaded neatly and with care. John was clear about the quote and possible additional costs, which were very reasonable. I would recommend his services, he has given a 10y guarantee for workmanship and 20y for materials used. Relieved to have the job done, and for it to have been a very positive experience.

John and his son John and the team are second to none. True tradesman who take pride in their work which seems to be a very hard thing to find these days. After being plagued with a leaking roof for the last 2 years (caused by some bad building work) and having had numerous roofers round to look at it, John (junior) arrived with confidence, professionalism and re-assurance that he would get the problem sorted. He methodically and meticulously located the leak, rectified and tested it and re-assured me once again that if there was ever another issue they would be back over to fix it. Our flat roof had started to grow a lot of vegetation and was not draining properly leading to leaks through the ceiling. John came at short notice last summer and cleared the problem then but the vegetation came back so we had to have the roof completely relaid. The company is in great demand and the weather has been pretty awful so this didn't happen till yesterday. After the team left we saw some more dripping so they came back first thing this morning and have sorted it out. It was caused by the overflow from a tank in the loft, which may have contributed to the original problems. Excellent and friendly service.

I was kept informed of cost of additional work and the final invoice was slightly less than I expected. Work started a bit later than planned but due to entirely understandable delays caused by weather. Attendance was always punctual (for visit to give estimate and when works carried out). Roofers were extremely hard working and completed work well within time estimate (even attending on a Saturday to complete one roof which couldn't be done earlier because of scaffolding). This is a small family owned and run business and it shows when it comes to customer service in particular. I cannot recommend this company highly enough. In fact, so impressed were the builders extending the house next door that the company has been asked to quote for that job also.

My 80 year old Mum desperately needed a new roof. JW Scudder Ltd came highly recommended from a friend. From the first meeting, John was professional but highly approachable, explaining in detail, (without over complicating) exactly what was required. A full written quotation followed and Mum was comforted to know that the company are members of a number of trade organisations (which meant that in the unlikely event the company became insolvent and there is a problem with her roof, it would be guaranteed. They are also registered under the Government Trustmark scheme. The quotation was highly competitive given what the work entailed. In terms of the work, from Day 1, John’s son (also called John) and Dom went above and beyond the call of duty. They arrived on time each day, kept Mum informed of their daily progress (and sent me photographs at the end of each day). On at least two occasions they discovered problems which could not have been foreseen. Instead of seizing the opportunity to make more money, they did their very best to rectify the problems for the lowest possible cost, for which we were both grateful. Aided by good weather, they finished the job ahead of schedule. The bottom line is that John, John and Dom took into account my Mum’s age and vulnerability (having recently lost my Dad) and did everything in their power to ensure that, what could have been a highly stressful process, was the complete opposite. We hope they trade for many years to come.

I invited John round to inspect my two lower tiled roofs to see what condition they were in and if it was time to replace. He turned up promptly had a look and advised that the larger rear roof was totally fine and didn't need anything doing and as expected the front one was shot and needed replacing. John turned up when he said he would explained what was going to happen then they cracked on. The work itself was completed quickly with minimum disruption and when finished neat and tidy. The guys are friendly approachable and I would have no issues in recommending them to anyone. This is the second time of using them and would do so again.

John and his team did an amazing job renovating the natural slate roof of our Victorian property in Blackheath. During the works John and his team kept us up to date with progress and when there were some issues during the job (a few rotten timbers) he would take a picture and send it to us with the cost to replace which was much appreciated. John also went to great lengths to source some specific ornamental ridge tiles for us from a reclamation yard in Kent (we live in a conservation area and needed to maintain the original roof features) and he found some which perfectly matched and were great value as second hand. The price he quoted for the work was exceptionally competitive and they also provide a ten year guarantee which is a great piece of mind. From our experience of dealing with John it seems he always has the client in mind and he is very conscious of not incurring unnecessary cost where possible. We recommend John and his team highly as they are top class roofers who are masters at their craft and are an absolute pleasure to deal with!

We are very late leaving this review as it was repair made nearly a year ago now and my apologies to John for this. We needed an emergency repair on a flat roof which had failed completely and, as a result, rainwater was flooding the room upstairs every time it rained. At the time, we had difficulty getting anyone to come around and look at it, never mind give us a quote. However, John arrived on time to provide a quote and gave us a few different options and an idea of when they could do the work. He followed up with the written quote and we were pleased that he was able to fit us in quickly (thankfully it was not a long job). We had a complete roof renewed & had several quotes. From the word go John Scudder was very professional taking time to explain everything. Each appointment made he was prompt & never cancelled. He always returned calls unlike some of the other companies approached. Scudders made everything easy & kept us informed through out the process. Despite the weather & a short delay they started work promptly & appeared very efficient in everything they did. The site was left clean & tidy & I was taken on a final inspection when the roof was finished, & any questions I raised were answered without me feeling patronised. The only gripe was that the skip was left in the drive for a few days after work had finished but I must point out this was the tile suppliers fault for not removing excess stock & despite Scudders repeated request to the supplier they dragged their heels somewhat. I would recommend Scudder roofing without hesitation.

Work consisted of a new slate roof with additional bay and was completed to a very high standard. Scaffolding was initially erected within a few hours and work on the rood commenced a couple of days later. Three roofers worked hard to complete all works in one week. I was taken up on the scaffolding to inspect the work. As well excellent roof work, all masonry had been made good and repainted. The area outside was left clean and tidy and the scaffolding removed within four working days.

Personable and tidy tradesmen. Nice job on roof, but in hindsight not so pleased. JW Scudder renewed our whole roof, boarded and insulated our loft and fitted new guttering, fascia and soffit boards, and we could not fault their workmanship. However, Three weeks after their job was complete, work began to replace our double glazing and the window fitters discovered the section of roof above our bay was not properly supported and in danger of collapsing. It transpired the roofers had not removed the old soffit and fascia boards, but rather covered them over with new plastic ones (we did not know to check this when contracting them, but have since learned many roofers do this if the wood is not rotten). Had they done so, it would have been clear that this particular section of roof was only being supported by the wood of the bay window frame but, regardless of this fact, given they were working both in our loft and directly above the bay, we feel that these well qualified, experienced, roofers should have noticed the issue and brought it to our attention. When we brought the situation to JW Scudder’s attention they took no responsibility and we are now not only having to pay someone else to complete the necessary structural work but also to re-do JW Scudder’s soffit and fascia work. After an initially pleasant interaction with this company, such a short time ago, we now have a rather bitter taste in our mouths (as well as a bigger hole in our pocket!)

After getting some quotes on the replacement of a garage roof for myself and my neighbour, I employed John and his team, based on both his understanding of what we needed and his extremely competitive quote. The work required removal of old asbestos roofing for both garages, and replacing it with more modern materials. He was able to get on to the job very quickly after the quote was agreed, and completed the job in only 2 days and with the minimum of fuss and disruption. John was professional throughout the whole process, explained what was going on in laymans terms, stuck to the price that was agreed (in addition to repairing a fault with my neighbours guttering free of charge) and provided a full 10 year guarantee. Given my previous experience with roofers recently, I would strongly recommend and endorse this company for any roofing work you might need, and would have no issue with using them again. I needed to replace the whole of the roof on my detached house so I used Which Local to select some likely candidates for quotes. I chose JW Scudder along with a number of other roofers based on their customer reviews. JohnÍs quote was competitive and when I met him I found him to be very personable and I liked that fact his was a family firm of which he was obviously very proud. His credentials by way of NFRC and TrustMark registration which offers insurance backed guarantees and his work for English Heritage was reassuring. I also liked the fact that he was a ïCompetantRooferÍ which means that he can self-certify his work and the Local Authority Building Control did not have to be involved. The job is now complete and I am very happy with the outcome. All of the team were very polite and considerate and I was kept informed throughout about progress and likely delays caused by adverse weather. They obviously care about the quality of their work. The site was left very clean and I have had comments about how good the roof looks. I would certainly use them again.

We found John Scudder and his team of John (Junior) and Reece to be reliable, accommodating, competitively priced, polite and trustworthy. The service they provided was first class. The finished roof has been admired by neighbours and passers-by and we have had many positive comments about it. They took great care to complete a turret in the original style - photo attached. We're very happy to recommend this company.

Dreams can come true: I am very nervous when I require a tradesman as you never really know what you are going to get.I needed the flat roof to my extension renewed. I had two or three quotes with some limited by there experience ( not leaving me with any choices). John on the other hand recommended a system that I had heard of before which did not require ripping the whole roof of and starting again. A tradesman who wanted to save me money a rare breed indeed (I know that what was recommended for me will not be suitable in all cases but the method saved me around £1500 which would have been the cost of ripping the whole roof out). His son ( qualified at college) and workmate were on time, worked from the start until they finished were polite and I know took a pride in their work. In addition I have never been offered a ten year labour guarantee before which in this case is backed up by the National Federation of roofing contractors. I would recommend this company

John Scudder was very professional. We needed our rear extension re-roofed and he advised there were three options but recommended the cheapest as the most suitable. His team were very efficient and the job was done on time with minimal mess and disruption. The job was done six months ago and there have been no issues. It has been looked at by a master builder, who is doing a different job for us, who commented on the quality of the work.

Family company. John's son, together with Reece, proved to be very hard working and completed the overlaying and water proofing of two flat roofs in one day. Found them to be competent, tidy, polite and the company dependable.

John and his team have just finished work on our roof, loft and guttering. They run a really professional and friendly outfit which i will be using again next year for future work. They work quickly, tidily and efficiently. John also stuck to his original quote even though there was additional work discovered; one of the jobs was to board out the 2nd half of our loft. John originally quoted for continuing the boarding on top of the existing rafters. It wasn't until work started that one of his team realised they would need to raise the height of the rafters so that the boarding would continue at the same height as the existing side. We were consulted as soon as this was discovered but the extra work was carried out at no additional charge because of the minor oversight. As they needed access to the property time constraints were quite difficult on my behalf to find a window of opportunity to be around so they could carry out the work. John was very accommodating and understanding with my situation and we were able to arrange a perfect slot for both of our schedules. We are very pleased with the work carried out and would highly recommend them if ever asked for a recommendation.

We have used this compny on two occasions. The first after we had received an expensive quote from another company which proved to be excessive. John Scudder analised precisely what was wrong and two of his men carried out the work within a few days which has proved extremely satisfactory. On the second occasion, a small gutter problem was identified as the cause of damp ingress and minor work was carried out on the spot. It is a family business with smart vans and staff who do not look for work that is not required and just give honest appraisals. They are very professional and a breath of fresh air in an age frequented by many cowboy operators.

John Scudder heads a small family roofing company. When invited to give an estimate for the complete renewal of three sections of tiled roof, he had a close look at the existing structure to ensure there were no underlying problems and gave good practical advice. Having accepted his estimate (the middle of three obtained) and agreed a provisional start date, I was kept fully informed of plans and, despite the wet weather in April, the start was only delayed by a few days. Once the work began, the team arrived promptly each day, worked diligently throughout taking their lunch on site _ and needing only a regular cup of tea to sustain them! The work was carefully planned to ensure that the roof was always watertight when the team were not on site. All the tiling was completed to a very high standard and additional insulation was laid to comply with current Building Regulations. The site was cleaned daily and scaffolding and skip were promptly cleared on the first working day after tiling was completed. Finally, a ten year NFRC guarantee was given and a Building Regulation Compliance Certificate was received. A very professional job completed with the minimum of fuss. Highly recommended.

John ScudderÍs team have done an excellent job of re-roofing our Victorian house. The house has an attic floor with dormer windows and the work included installation of roof insulation. When asked to estimate John was helpful with advice on options, provided costs for alternative, showed us examples of different tiles, indicated the likely timetable and timing, and warned of weather risks. John was quick to inform us when the initially agree start date had to be put back by a week. Once a start was made, the work was completed very efficiently without a break. The small team on site were very friendly, kept us informed of progress each day and worked co-operatively with another contractor who was installing a shower room on the top floor at the same time. The inevitable mess and debris around the outside of the house was regularly tidied. The original estimate was very competitive against other quotations and there was only one very small extra agreed at the beginning when the roof could be examined close up from the scaffolding. We are very pleased with the new roof and the way it was installed and would thoroughly recommend John and his team.

Mr Scudder completed a roof overhaul including re-bedding all the ridge tiles. In addition he remove and re tiled a roof. Very good and clean job. Would recommend him to others and would be happy to use again.

My mum had problems with her roof drain, it was blocked and in heavy rain it over ran to the garage roof and garden. Called JW Scudder they turned up on time sorted out the block drain. Will use them again.
