Darren’s communication throughout was excellent and his workmanship was of a good standard. The original quote was £162 including VAT to install an integrated oven and hardwire an electric hob. The oven was fitted, but the hob could not be completed because it was not the correct size and the worktop required carpentry. Darren did attempt to resolve this, which I appreciated, but a carpenter was ultimately needed. Unfortunately, the job then became considerably more expensive. Darren’s hourly rate is £135 + VAT and, because he had to leave and return once the carpentry was completed, I was advised that a further £135 + VAT call-out would apply. This would have resulted in a total bill of around £324 for what was originally a straightforward job. I felt this was excessive and, after checking with other local electricians, found his hourly rate to be considerably higher than others. We eventually found another local electrician who completed the hob installation at £60 and they also sourced a carpenter. While Darren’s communication and work were good, I was disappointed that no adjustment was offered to the return charge or hourly rate when I raised my concerns. Darren explained that his charge is based on the costs involved in operating the business, including travel, vehicles, insurance, qualifications, administration and other overheads. However many electricians charge half this cost with the same business related costs. For this reason alone I would not hire him again.

Hi Claire, thank you for your feedback and kind comments on my communication and workmanship. I’m sorry you were disappointed with the proposed return cost. The £162 including VAT was an estimate, not a fixed quotation. It covered our minimum charge for up to one hour, assuming both appliances fitted the existing units and worktop. The estimate explained that additional time was charged in 30-minute increments. The oven was installed, but your supplied hob was incompatible with the worktop opening and space beneath. Despite my attempts, further unit alterations were needed. I explained this in writing with photographs. The visit lasted 1 hour and 15 minutes. As a goodwill gesture, I waived the extra time and charged £162. This adjusted the first visit’s charge, not the return charge. The further £162 was our minimum for a separate visit after carpentry. The £324 in your review was the proposed total for two visits, not an increase for the original visit. Similar expenses do not mean identical costs: overheads, staffing, insurance, training, administration and off-site work vary. Another electrician’s rate does not establish what is viable for mine. Charges must cover full costs and sustainable profit, not simply wages. Our prices may not suit every budget; I respect your choice of another electrician. They reflect quality workmanship, electrical safety, reliability and customer care. I’m pleased the hob installation is complete. Thank you again for your feedback.
Tidy, efficient and completed to the quote.

Darren replaced our smoke / heat detectors and installed an extraction fan. The initial quote came in quickly and when the work was done Darren and his apprentice were tidy, polite and completed the work as per the quote. Perfect job!
