Founded in 1993 by two skilled local tradesmen, Malcolm Sweeney and Drew Hay, Balhousie Glazing aims to deliver high-quality glazing and joinery services across Scotland.

The duo initially began by glazing windows and doors for a national brand, but their exceptional work developed a strong reputation, so they decided to set up their own company. 

For customers, the buying process begins with a home visit by an experienced consultant, who offers a personalised consultation of possible solutions. 

One key focus for the company is pricing transparency. ‘Our policy is simple: the first price we provide is our best price,’ said James. ‘This removes the need for haggling and ensures customers receive a fair, honest and straightforward buying experience from the outset. 

‘We present each customer with a detailed visual breakdown of their proposed contract, including individual product prices, specifications and design visuals. By clearly showing what they’re paying for and why, we help customers make informed decisions with confidence and without pressure.’

The company also delivers exceptional customer service. 

‘Recently, one of our suppliers experienced a delay in delivering a composite door for a job,’ said James. ‘By the time the door arrived, our installation diary was fully booked. As it was so close to Christmas, our fitters didn’t want the customer to be left waiting, so they volunteered to install the door on a Saturday.’

Balhousie Glazing recently celebrated eight years as an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT). This is a legal setup that allows all employees to share in the company's profits and have a voice in its success without having to buy the shares directly.

‘This model has empowered our team, fostering a culture of ownership, collaboration, and shared success,’ said James. 

‘It has also enhanced our commitment to providing outstanding service, as each employee is invested in the company's success and the satisfaction of our customers. We go above and beyond to deliver top-quality products and exceptional service because, for us, it’s personal.’

They also run a successful apprenticeship program, which has seen two apprentices become fully qualified in the last 12 months.

‘Supporting our apprentices is one of our greatest accomplishments, as it secures the future of craftsmanship in our industry,’ said James. 

‘This programme is designed to provide hands-on training and professional development, ensuring we nurture the next generation of skilled fitters.’

This work impressed our judging panel: ‘Their achievements in the last 12 months are impressive,’ said one of our judges. ‘It’s great to see a business promoting apprenticeships and feeling proud of the members who have qualified. I believe this is a trader who really uses and understands the value of Which? Trusted Traders.’  

Building charitable links with the community 

‘At Balhousie, we pride ourselves not only on our commitment to customer satisfaction but also on our active involvement in giving back to the local community,’ said James. ‘We believe that nurturing relationships with customers extends beyond business, and we continuously seek ways to make a positive impact.’

The company donates annually to the Perth Community Fire Station's Christmas Initiative, which provides gifts to children and vulnerable people in the community, partners with the local foodbank, and sponsors a local football club. 

Balhousie also invited Andy’s Man Club, a men’s mental health charity, to speak to their team last year. 

‘Their open discussion on mental health resonated with everyone, highlighting the importance of support within the workplace,’ said James. ‘As a token of appreciation for their time, we donated to their cause.
