My ancient boiler broke down during the cold snap just before Christmas. Alan went above and beyond to try and fix it in short term, despite being extremely busy at that time. He did manage to get it going again which tied us over until the new year. He has recently installed a new boiler and at the same time made a number of upgrades to the whole central heating system which were overdue. In my view that is where the benefit comes in - using someone who knows and understands your heating system versus random heating engineers sent by British Gas. Alan explains the technical details well which makes you feel a bit more in control. The work was done with a high degree of professionalism to the agreed schedule and budget and I would be happy to recommend Alan to my friends.

After deliberating for a long time finally decided it was time to change my old back boiler that had served me well for the last 25 years. Alan explained the options available to me before installation and his technical knowledge impressed me and where he could not answer a query he was open with me and he came back later with the answer. Alan estimated the work would take around 3 days and they did it in 2 days. Very high standard of work and did a few extras without charging me any additional amount. Was very pleased with the outcome.

I rang Alan when our wireless thermostat (and therefore central heating) stopped working just before Christmas. He kindly guided me over the phone how to put it right and came round a few days later to install a new thermostat. He also serviced our boiler and fixed a leaking radiator at the same time and then fitted a new filter tap in our kitchen, which turned out to be quite tricky. They were all long overdue jobs so we were very grateful, particularly to have a working kitchen tap again. I also appreciated the way he explained what needed doing and what it would entail.

We contacted Alan as the Vaillant boiler installed in 2016 developed fault 28, it was the worst fault possible as it covered so many scenarios, and was out of guarantee. The most common fault replacing the PCB board failed, which was £250. The older Vaillant boiler same model was ok but 10 years old. Following a discussion the advice was to replace them both at the same time. We chose to install Worcester Bosch replacements as these had proved to be very reliable in our previous home and Alan had installed and serviced them. Alan sourced 2 Worcester Bosch boilers and gave us a quote the next day, Saturday, which was agreed and the work was completed on the following Friday, with a 10 year guarantee. On Friday morning he arrived on time and the job was completed by 4pm which included testing the system, completing the paperwork and clearing everything away leaving the place tidy. He completed the job without any fuss. Alan is always reliable, always texts to say what time he is coming. He has been our go to heating engineer/ plumber since 2010. I would not hesitate to recommend him.

Tricky pipework transfer from communal tank to mains

We had a job we'd been putting off for a while. Very old and fragile pipes connected to a communal tank needed to be disconnected and capped off, and new copper pipework needed to be run through from the mains. There were a few risks involved with this one, but there was no one else I would have trusted with it. Alan has serviced our boiler a couple of times and done another excellent plumbing job for us, and was the only person we considered for this job. Alan talked us through all the potential risks and gave us a competitive quote. He arrived on time and got the job done perfectly. An added bonus is that he's approachable, friendly and always takes the time to answer any questions you may have. I can't recommend him highly enough.

We needed a new boiler and I contacted several suppliers, including asking for local recommended engineers and reading the Which? reports. I contacted Alan as he was recommended on Which? and he was very helpful, explaining everything clearly and patiently. He was very busy, but he fitted us into his schedule, came to check out the system and was able to give us a quote immediately, and confirmed by text. When the work was done, it was efficient and everything was cleaned up afterwards and he did not charge for checking out another problem which he investigated for us. Appointments were kept punctually and he called if delayed. Subsequently, we have had a leak in a joint connecting to the original pipes which he responded to and fixed very quickly, suggesting a long term solution. His prices were competitive, I valued his comments and I would have no hesitation in recommending him.

Renew Heating and Hot Water System

As Which subscriber, when our existing 15-year-old boiler gave up and left us with no hot water or heating on 8th Jan 2022 we knew we had to replace the system. This was some of the coldest weather so far this winter. We checked online for approved traders and system manufacturers. We selected Worcester Bosch and chose what appeared to be two models which would suit our requirements. We then contacted Alan and explained our situation. Alan came to see us on Monday midday on10th Jan and looked at our requirements, advising us as to what was required to be done and to replace nine radiators as well as our boiler. He quoted us for replacing the boiler only and for replacing both boiler and radiators. When the chosen boiler could not be readily sourced Alan procured the latest Greenstar 8000 boiler and was able to start work on the Tuesday 18th Jan leaving us with hot water on Tuesday evening and finishing the install on Wed 19th Jan with full heating. At all times Alan was careful not to leave any mess and the pipework on all fittings was extremely neat. Alan gave us an explanation of how the boiler functioned and told us what to look out for regarding bleeding and topping up the system. All has been working well for a week now and we appreciate our newfound comfort. I would have no hesitation in recommending Alan Mack services to friends and neighbours.

I called Alan at a time of great vulnerability, during the pandemic in 2020. My wife is severely disabled, and we were shielding both her and her elderly mother. After a number of attempts to resolve our heating issues - even by a large, well known British supplier - our heating was still not working effectively. Our radiators were also beginning to pinhole, and there were other odd issues that no one would come out for. We had just said goodbye to a plumber who had hospitalised himself by not wearing appropriate safety gear. Then along came Alan Mack. He was friendly, knowledgeable, professional, and helpful to the point of explaining everything I didn't understand, in terms I could. He took a single day to resolve every plumbing issue we had, route our pipes properly, replace 7 radiators, and convert our gravity-fed system to pressurised. To my shame, it has taken me more than a year to get around to leaving this review. We have never had to call him back, but we would not hesitate to call him again, or to recommend his services to anyone.

Alan replaced our boiler, the-routing our flue. He explained in advance what our choices were and put us under no pressure. He kept to arranged appointment times, calling if he was going to be delayed. The work was done, explaining things throughout and he cleaned up after himself. We had three radiators that were found to have faulty old parts that unexpectedly had to be replaced. It was a bit of a surprise but he used parts from the smaller two to fix the larger to keep costs down (they were so old he couldn’t get new parts) We found Alan to be reliable and communicative. He’s happy to take the time to answer questions and I would definitely recommend him.

When I made contact with Alan (after finding him on Which?) about providing and installing a replacement boiler, he was quick to arrange a visit. He talked through the work thoroughly, explaining options and potential issues. He then immediately provided a clear summary and estimate of the proposed work. Once we had selected Alan, he reconfirmed the quote and booked a date a few days later. Alan and his colleague arrived as arranged and worked through the day completing the work as agreed. They stopped only to discuss options and issues, undertaking some additional work at Alan's own cost after some complications arose. After a long day (9.30 am-7.30 pm) Alan took us through the installation in detail; tidied up and removed the rubbish, leaving us with a working and professional-looking boiler installation. It can be disruptive having people working in the house but Alan and his colleague were both highly personable and professional and made the experience as easy as possible.

I have used Alan before on a boiler repair a while back and needed a complete house heating system put in my new house I bought last year Alan has been working here for for about 7 months. He's installed a new boiler and cylinder underfloor heating and a pumped system to increase my pressure like he suggested he's also installed 3 new bathrooms for me. His services and recommendation has been outstanding. He's gone above and beyond with his service and even helped me with recommend other excellent tradesmen when I was I stuck or let down. It was exhausting this project but working with Alan was a relief and had total confidence when he carried out what he said he would do. To say I'm happy would be an understatement. Alan Mack recently installed a new boiler for us at my elderly mum’s property after she had been let down by Homeserve and had been without heating and hot water for a month. For a whole variety of reasons, it was an awkward and difficult job, not least because lack of use for a month of the 40yr old heating system resulted in a blockage that was extremely difficult to fix. Alan went above and beyond to resolve the problem, persisting with a whole range of potential solutions, so committed was he to leaving my mum with a fully functioning system, which in the end he achieved. We were very grateful for his persistence and his transparency and integrity in coming to a fair price to cover his additional unforeseen costs. We would not hesitate to recommend Alan, who we also found to be very competitively priced compared to British Gas.

I found Alan mack online and asked him to come and have a look at my pressure in my cold water throughout my house. There has been several other plumbers to try to fix this and have spent considerable amount of money to rectify. Alan knew pretty my straight away what the problem could be and explained it in a easy way to understand and withing 2 hrs my water was running perfectly. His cost was a fraction of what I have paid in the past. I have had this problem for yrs and started to give up until Alan came round. I will forever be grateful to him and will always be using him from now on.

Alan fitted a new boiler, converting the house from traditional to combi. This took two days. Alan gave confidence throughout that he knew what he was doing, how the work would go and it was all done to the required standard. He had opportunities to boost the final bill but choose not to do so, indeed providing better value instead. I've marked him down one star on Customer Service since he isn't the greatest at communicating in advance - but once he has communicated he has proved committed and reliable.

I have used Alan Mack twice this year, and both times he has speedily diagnosed the fault with my boiler. The first visit was a leak in pipework behind the boiler. The boiler was a large freestanding boiler in a tight space, but Alan was able to remove the boiler and fix the leak. He also made secure the extraction pipe above. Very pleased with his knowledge and speed of response.

Alan was able to attend to the task promptly. He arrived punctually and addressed me politely and courteously. He checked the boiler and found it to be in good condition and informed me of any signs that would indicate a need for any investigation at any point in the future. He also checked the radiators and the heating system and discovered an airlock.Alan found and resolved the cause of the airlock. He also checked all the gas pipework. Alan explained all that he did and recommended appropriate settings for the valves. The work was completed according to the agreed schedule and budget In resolving the air lock Alan found that specified valves were faulty. On the completion of his inspection,we discussed the heating system and Alan provided details and costs of the valve replacements and costs of replacing radiators, as discussed. I was particularly impressed by Alan's attention to detail and determination to provide high and quality standards in his work.
