Mike and his colleague fixed a number of small electrical issues for us in a two-hour visit: they arrived promptly at the time agreed, and dealt with all the issues very efficiently, charging on the basis advertised (hourly rate as it was a small job). We are now planning to use Better Heating and Lighting for a bigger piece of work. The administration is also very efficient: emails are replied to promptly and with the information requested.

We enlisted the help of Mike and his team to survey the home we were planning to move into, and then to rectify the issues discovered during the survey. The subsequent works were substantial, but we felt very comfortable and confident in Mike throughout the process. He was incredibly communicative and open about every step of the process, and was very clear about pricing and timings ahead of time - really great service. The works completed on the house were great, with several high-urgency fixes being completed promptly and safely, and also including cosmetic jobs like adding new LEDs to rooms and replacing the old doorbell with a new system. Overall we found Mike and co. were fantastic to work with, and there's no question who we will be reaching out to the next time we have any electrical works that need to be done.

I have been using this firm for many years. Mike and his son visited my home to sort out a non-working extractor fan and an electrical issue we have. The work was completed efficiently and professionally. They also visited within 48 hours.

It was very nice to find a local company that was also interested in doing smaller jobs. I had 3 light fittings changed and a problematic electric shower resolved. Mike and Alex did all the required checks during the work and explained what the problem was and how it needed to be resolved. Very friendly and tidy, and good value. Having moved into my new home, it was apparent there were numerous electrical issues. Mike and Alex were able to identify all concerns and provide quotes for the work. Essentially the house needed a major upgrade and making it safe. They were clean, considerate and always on time. I feel much safer now that the work has completed and continue to use them for other electrical needs including garden lighting and sockets, utility room updates and changes and new hanging lighting. We called Mike to help replace a bathroom light fitting that one of our housemates had attempted to DIY. Mike and Alex were so friendly and we laughed about how common a call out this was (their van even says Don't DIY on the side)! Our house is quite old and has some creative wiring in places, but they checked and tested everything thoroughly to ensure it was safe before fitting the new light with no problems. I picked Mike’s firm because of the excellent reviews on this site and wasn’t disappointed. He and his son worked as a team to find and repair the fault, doing so swiftly and explaining what had happened and what they were doing to fix it. An absolute find and I’m sure I’ll use them again.

A new consumer unit was fitted together with other electrical jobs, the work was done in a very professional manner, clean tidy work, on schedule and to the original estimate, great communication and aftercare supplying certificates etc. Highly Recommended

We had Mike and his son upgrade our very old fuse box. They carried out the work to time and to quote and we very much appreciated the thoroughness with which they carried out the work. Felt like our new flat had had an electrical MOT by the time they had finished. They tidied up after themselves and were a pleasure to deal with and friendly to boot. Definitely recommend them.

Michael and Alex carried out an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) on the circuits contained in our old plastic consumer unit and subsequently installed a new ten way, high integrity, dual RCD, fire rated consumer unit. Whilst doing this they found some faults, such as hazardous wiring, rodent chewed cable etc. and fixed them on the spot. The charges for the work seemed fair to us and they were very prompt in addressing the problems as they were uncovered, in quoting and in sending appropriate paperwork. Michael explained each step and was very clear and helpful. We felt we were in safe hands. We phoned him when we had a concern after a visit and he was helpful and reassuring. He and his son Alex are prompt, efficient, clear up after work effectively and are charming people who do an excellent job. Highly recommend this company.

Michael, the proprietor of Better Heating and Lighting Ltd was recommended via my cousin for an issue we'd lived with for years. From the get go our dialogue was open, honest and friendly; one could say that through our initial interaction we qualified each other as to whether we were a good fit for the endeavour ahead. Working with his youngest son, apprenticing under his father, what struck us mostly is Michael's passion for his profession; a professional who enjoys explains the whys and wherefores of everything that he is doing for his client, a knowledgeable polite engaging cordial communicative specialist - what a pleasure, what an oasis in a desert of skilled trader mediocrity! Summary of Works: Recessed lighting removed from the ceiling and inspected. Cause of the flickering lights - burning of the wires due very poor connections at each fitting! This required a rewire as the cables were too short to ensure proper connections in insulated enclosures. All lamp holders were replaced and new energy efficient LED lamps installed. The dangling cables feeding the light switch were rewired and hidden behind our wood panelling and the switch installed in a better location. Our security lights which had been connected directly behind a ring main socket - very dangerous, was rewired and a 5amp fused double pole switch spur unit for both security lights installed. Due a loose earth connection one of the dual socket outlet in the utility room was also replaced. Time: 1 day.

My tenants called me on a Sunday evening to report a problem with the smoke alarms at the property. They kept going off intermittently for no apparent reason, causing a lot of noise! I called Mike to explain the issue, and within 30mins, he was at the property. He investigated the issue and managed to stop the problem. I would definitely recommend his services.

Mr Gilbert came to install a new oven for me. He identified that the property was not properly earthed, gave me a clear explanation of the issue, and explained how best to resolve it. He subsequently returned to earth the fuse box and install the new cooker. He ensured safety standards were met, whilst also being sensitive to the layout of the kitchen and limiting damage to decoration. The final invoice matched his initial estimate. In summary, I found Mr Gilbert to be prompt, efficient, and kind. I would certainly be happy to use his services again.

Mike of Better Heating and Lighting has taken care of our electrics for probably more than 15 years, so that probably speaks for itself in terms of our faith in the thoroughness and safety of their work. Most recently they have provided electric sockets etc for a new fitted bedroom. As usual, the work was completed when we needed it and to a high standard.

It’s very hard to find an electrician to come and do small jobs however Michael Gilbert did! He texted me to say what time he would arrive and was here on time. A very courteous and professional man who solved the problem of installing a double switch to 6 spotlights instead of a single. He also mended another spotlight and a broken dimmer switch. Michael had the spare parts in his van so didn’t have to go and buy them which was an added bonus. He was very respectful of my newly painted walls when moving his ladder and kit. I would highly recommend him for any electrical work.
